Apex Legends is one of the most popular hero shooters around, but it’s also notoriously difficult for new players to get into, compared to a game like Fortnite. To soften the learning curve a bit and make picking things up a bit easier, the game introduced Orientation matches. These bot lobbies give players time to learn the essentials of movement, legend abilities, and map layouts before they’re tossed to the wolves. Unfortunately, it’s not obvious at first glance what you need to do to graduate from Orientation to the real thing. Here’s how to complete Orientation matches to unlock game modes in Apex Legends.

Instead of normal lobbies populated by other players, Orientation matches are comprised mostly of bots. That gives new players an easy way to learn the ropes. Orientation matches don’t just help new players learn, however, they also gatekeep other game modes. The good news is you can complete Orientation matches in several ways, after finishing the Tutorial. How fast you do it depends on your skill and a bit of luck. You can complete Orientation matches by coming in first once or by coming in the top five several times. You can also do so by finishing a larger number of Orientation matches, even if you never rank highly in them.

This means the fastest way to complete Orientation matches in Apex Legends and unlock the rest of the game is to win. Even against bots, that can be tricky, given that the whole reason you’re in Orientation in the first place is that you’re still learning. Still, knowing that you can grind away at Orientation and eventually unlock the rest of Apex Legends even if you never place in the top five should be some consolation at least. There’s a reason many veterans consider Apex one of the best shooters. If you stick around past Orientation, you might come to agree.
