Once you reach the climactic ending of Chapter 2 in Monster Hunter Wilds, you’ll finally fight the terrifying Black Flame or Nu Udra. This monster is different from other foes you’ve faced in the game so far, and we’re not talking about the swapping of legs for tentacles. This foe is equally big, dangerous, and fast and can even wrap itself with flames, making it one of the toughest fights in the early-game hours. But if you manage to beat it, you’ll unlock some pretty useful rewards.
The Black Flame (Nu Udra) Weaknesses

Nu Udra is very difficult to beat, but thankfully, it has many weaknesses players can target. Beyond that, it has many, emphasis on many, parts you can break, which will weaken the monster considerably. The big challenge, however, is to aim at these parts and be able to sever them or break them in the first place. Regardless, let’s begin with elemental weaknesses. As a monster that loves wrapping itself with Fire, you’ll only need one element:
- Water
You can use any of the Water-infused weapons at your disposal, preferably any that can cause slashing damage, as this will help you sever parts easily. Aside from that, we don’t recommend bringing status effects weapons. They are not too effective for this fight. Also, Shock and Pitfall traps are the only ones that work here. Nu Udra is immune to Flash Pods, so don’t even use those.
In terms of weak parts, there are a few you need to watch out for. Its main weak point is its mouth. Targeting it will be difficult for some melee users, but ranged hunters won’t struggle that much. You can also break this creature’s head with any weapon, but most importantly, you can sever four of its six tentacles if you’re fast enough. Doing so will cause a lot of damage and will make the fight much easier, as you’ll be taking away some of Nu Udra’s moves.
Hunt Strategy

Here’s where the fun begins. Fighting Nu Udra isn’t easy at all, at least compared to other Monster Hunter Wilds foes. Despite its towering size, it is quite a slippery monster. It can charge at you at fast speeds, expand its body to slam a huge portion of the arena, and even perform a lethal grab attack that will set your hunter on Fire. So, to survive this fight, follow these steps:
- Bring as many cool drinks and nullberries as possible.
- Cool drinks will help you fight the area’s and monster’s heat, but nullberries will help you get rid of the constant fire status the monster will apply. If you have a fire-resistant armor set, you won’t suffer much. But if you don’t prepare as many of these items as possible,
- Focus on the tentacles at all times.
- While its mouth is the weakest point, aiming for the tentacles is much better. You can alternate between hitting the front and back tentacles. However, Nu Udra will perform combos with all of them, so always watch out for any tentacles that are moving as they signal an incoming attack.
- During its enraged phase, move behind it.
- When Nu Udra wraps itself on Fire, move behind it. Eventually, it will breathe Fire but will only target the front of it. That is the perfect moment to move behind it and get some hits in. You can even interrupt the attack if you do enough damage.
The above might seem like a few tips for this dangerous fight, but they are the most effective. In terms of moves, watch out for the bombs it launches throughout the fight. When on Fire, it will launch two bombs at you. Before it ends its enraged mode, it will launch a cluster of bombs, hitting a large area. When that happens, run away. Another move you need to watch out for is its grab attack. When it winds up its six tentacles, run away, or it will grab you and burn you.
Nu Udra Materials
After eventually defeating this monster, you’ll unlock some rare materials that will let you craft a few parts of a new armor set. However, you won’t be able to complete the set until you progress through the story. Still, they are good items, so hold on to them.
