One of your last hunts in Monster Hunter Wilds will be Xu Wu. Compared to previous Guardian monsters, this one doesn’t have those Wyvern Milk explosive skills, but that doesn’t mean it’s less deadly. On the contrary, this octopus-like foe can one-shot you if you’re not careful, and despite its towering size, it is quite fast during a hunt. Fortunately, it has many weaknesses you can exploit if you’re fast enough and know where to hit it.
Xu Wu Weaknesses

Kicking off with the elemental and status weaknesses, Xu Wu doesn’t have many compared to other creatures in Monster Hunter Wilds. However, the two you can exploit are quite useful. When facing Xu Wu, bring the following element and status effect:
- Ice
- Poison
We’ve seen Ice work better against Xu Wu, as it causes your attacks to do more damage. However, if you’re comfortable with weapons that are great at applying Poison, go for those.
Regarding its weak points, Xu Wu has many, which make up for the lack of elemental weaknesses. Of its six legs, you can break its two front arms and sever all four of its back arms. Beyond that, you can also break its head and mouth. Also, most of these weak parts are weak to all types of damage, meaning that every weapon will perform well during the fight.
Hunt Strategy

When you face Xu Wu in Monster Hunter Wilds, your strategy will vary depending on whether you’re a melee or ranged hunter.
- Melee hunters should focus only on the arms.
- Targeting Xu Wu’s arms is the best way to bring the monster down. The ones you should prioritize are the front ones, but they can be hard to target. These arms become blades and even launch projectiles, so you need to time your attacks for whenever the arms are not morphed. On the other hand (no pun intended), you can aim for the back arms and sever them one by one. This will reduce Xu Wu’s mobility and overall damage.
- Ranged hunters should focus on Xu Wu’s head and mouth.
- While it isn’t difficult to sever arms as a ranged hunter, focusing on the monster’s mouth and head is an ideal alternative. You can wait for Xu Wu to open its mouth and shoot all your ammo inside it. This will damage it considerably. Alternatively, you can focus on the head and open as many wounds as possible, which will also damage the monster fast and bring it down constantly.
Regardless of your strategy, there are a few things to keep in mind. If Xu Wu grabs you, you can escape its grasp by spamming the attack button or shooting something inside its mouth. When Xu Wu opens its mouth and stands up on its back arms, dodge, or you might get carted. Lastly, Xu Wu will occasionally jump away from you and morph its front arms into blades. If this attack hits you, it will remove almost 3/4 of your HP bar. When this happens, run away from the other arm because this two-hit combo is the deadliest.
