Another souls-like has landed, and you know what that means: frustration. No. Not really. But as expected from the genre, there are many challenging bosses to face and some might put a stop to many players’ promising adventures. In the case of The First Berserker: Khazan, the first boss everyone will face is Yetuga. This huge Yeti doesn’t play around and doesn’t hold its punches, either. Also, contrary to other souls-like, where the first boss is unkillable, this one is, and most importantly, is required to continue the story. So, if you’re struggling with it, here are a few tips on how to beat it.
Yetuga Boss Fight
When the fight begins, you’ll see Yetuga using similar attacks to other yetis in The First Berserker: Khazan, mainly the four-hit combo that ends with two quick hits. The easiest way to avoid this attack is by parrying each blow. By now, you should already be comfortable with parrying, but if you aren’t, don’t worry. Souls-likes are all about dying and trying again.
During certain intervals, Yetuga will raise its first and wind up an attack. This attack will smash the ground with its fist. If it hits you, it will take out a big chunk of your HP. If you block it, not parry it, it will almost deplete your whole stamina bar. Quickly after, it will attack you with another blow with its other arm. Finding the timing for these attacks is tricky, so it is better to dodge both of these hits.

After that, it will raise both of its arms for a devastating attack. Just like above, try to parry it to negate all damage, but if you’re not comfortable with parrying, run away: this attack hits like a truck.
Between those attacks, Yetuga will charge at you to try and tackle. Be careful with this attack because even if you’re a bit far from it, its arms can also damage you as it moves them. However, if you position yourself next to a wall, Yetuga can hit itself with it, which will stun it for a moment. Yet, here’s another attack that will catch many off guard. If you hit Yetuga from behind while it’s stunned, it will fall on its back and damage you, so always hit him from the front or the sides.
Second Phase
While it isn’t technically a second phase in the sense of Yetuga having a second HP bar, we call it as such because once you land a critical hit (after depleting its stamina/posture), you’ll see some new moves.

Still, the most dangerous move Yetuga will pull off is a grab move, which should help you get familiarized with these attacks as they appear quite often in The First Berserk: Khazan. To avoid it, you have to dodge out of the way whenever you see the boss move its arms backward. You’ll also get a sound queue that will indicate when it will launch the grab move. So, if you hear it, move away.

Sadly, this isn’t the only grab move, as Yetuga will also pull off another one after you land yet another critical hit. This time, it will imbue its left arm with frost and grab you. If the attack hits, it will hold you for a few seconds, throw you to the ground, and then punch you. This one hits even harder than the first grab move.
Lastly, you should also watch out for its Frost breath. In our case, it only happened once, and in one of our attempts, it didn’t happen at all. If it happens to you, though, just run to the opposite side of the beam to avoid it.
Before we wrap this up, here’s a summary of the strategy you must follow for Yetuga:
- Parry all of its combos.
- The quick ones are easier to parry. Do not bother with the ones where it winds up its hits.
- Listen for the sound queues for the first grab move.
- If Yetuga is far from you and moves its arms backward, roll away. Don’t try to parry this move.
- For the second grab move, keep an eye on its left hand.
- If it glows, move away.
Other than that, charged attacks are ideal against this monster, and if you manage to land a few on its head, Yetuga will fall on its back, giving you some time to get a few hits in.
