With Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth‘s action-oriented approach toward its combat, one vital thing that’ll help you in battle is knowing how to switch characters. There will be times when you won’t be able to use your party lead, whoever that might be. And due to that, it is important to swap members on the fly. While the game does a great job of explaining the mechanics, it can get hectic once you start seeing new and powerful enemies. So, you better master this skill if you want to survive in this new world.

There are two ways to switch characters in battle in Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth. The first will allow you to issue commands to your party members, while the second will allow you to control said character. Here, we’ll go over the two options so you can dominate this skill while fighting.

Issuing Commands

The first way to switch to other characters is by pressing R2/L2. Doing so will slow down time considerably and allow you to issue commands. This is great if you’re controlling your lead and want to heal them or have another party member use a certain skill to stagger or pressure enemies. Keep in mind that you can only issue commands to characters in your party, not to the ones in the backline.

Controlling Characters

The second way to switch characters in battle in Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth is by using your directional buttons. This will allow you to control any of your other two active party members. This is useful whenever a character is stunned, or you want to make one party member fill its ATB gauge faster. You can also use it if you feel the AI is not fighting well on its own, but that rarely happens.

While you can stick to your lead party members, you should familiarize yourself with everyone’s combat capabilities. Whether it is the range-oriented Barrett of the trusty healer Aerith, everyone has useful skills you should learn. So, don’t hesitate to experiment with other party members if you want to dominate the game’s combat systems.
