How To Find a Village in Minecraft 1.20

It takes a village.

Minecraft villages are valuable places for resources and having a place to hide out. These settlements are filled with villagers, docile non-player characters (NPC) with large noses. You can trade with villagers, rest in their beds, and gather food at their farms. However, towns can be hard to come by in Minecraft. You can wander for hours in your world before eventually coming across a village. Does the Minecraft 1.20 update make discovering villages easier or harder in the game?

Each new Minecraft game file creates a newly generated world to explore. What spawns in your world is completely random. You have no control over what and where anything appears. The best ways to find a village in Minecraft 1.20 are:

  1. Search flat areas in every biome for naturally generated buildings, villagers, or pathways.
  2. Use the console command to type /locate village to get coordinates to the nearest town.

Console Commands are cheat codes you can type in on your chat window. You type in a “/” and then your command. You can essentially give yourself anything you want in Minecraft. If you have chat commands enabled, use /locate village to get the coordinates to the closest town and how many blocks away it is.

Alternatively, if you have chat commands disabled and want to play the game old school, you can simply search for a village the old-fashioned way. While this way is much slower, there are tell-tale signs of when a settlement is nearby. For example, towns are the only area type that spawns multiple buildings in a secluded area. Villages also tend to only spawn on flat surfaces. They are not usually found in mountains.

Villages are found in nearly every biome after the Minecraft 1.20 update. To find a settlement, check out these biomes:

  • Desert
  • Plains
  • Meadow
  • Savanna
  • Snowy Plains
  • Taiga
  • Snowy Taiga (Only in Bedrock Edition)
  • Sunflower Plains (Only in Bedrock Edition)

If you spot a villager or zombie villager wandering around, that usually means you’re close to a village. As you get closer to the town, you’ll also begin finding pathways and decorative lamp posts.

Since villages generate randomly, you’ll likely have to explore your world extensively before finding your first settlement. Sometimes, you can get lucky and find a town as soon as you spawn. If you’re playing a Superflat world in Minecraft Java Edition, you’ll find towns everywhere.

Recent updates have also included a feature where you can create your own villages as well if you find yourself at a loss trying to locate one naturally.
