After recruiting Emmrich, you can return to the Necropolis to complete several side quests. Among them is the Pinnacle of Its Kind mission, where you need to investigate a trapped demon that seems to be on the verge of escaping. It seems it has split into three pieces, and you must now hunt down these demons in various locations. After returning them to their source, you must face the Formless One dragon boss in Dragon Age: The Veilguard.
Dragon Age: The Veilguard Pinnacle of Its Kind Quest Guide
You can start the Pinnacle Its Kind quest after completing the Restless Spirit mission from Emmrich. After defeating enemies in the Chamber of the Unforged, you will meet with the Formless One for the first time in Dragon Age: The Veilguard. Although you cannot see its physical form, you can learn more about it from a text on one of the corpses in the area.
The monster is clearly planning something, so Rook and their team need to defeat the three shards of this demon in three locations. Here are all their locations:
- Dock Town – Spillway
- Arlathan Forest – Tattered Bridge
- Hossberg’s Wetlands – Solitude’s Edge
To summon the Formless One boss, turn off the green fire in the marked area. The shards will show up a second later, and they are all the same monsters but with different elements. The first is Necrotic, the second is Lightning, and the third is Fire. It doesn’t matter where you go since you will always face the Necrotic demon first.
The monster will also summon several mobs that will aid it during the battles. The Necrotic monster is weak against Lightning, the Lightning demon is weak against Necrotic damage, and the Fire creature is weak against Ice. The shards aren’t hard to beat, but the Fire demon is the most annoying one since it likes to dash around the arena.
How to Beat Formless One Boss
The Formless One will possess the corpse of a dragon to fight you. This monster is a Level 40 enemy and will attack you with various Lightning magic. The best element to use is Necrotic, and you can bring Emmrich and Lucanis to this battle. These two companions work well together, and both have plenty of Necrotic abilities.
At the start of the battle, it will shoot several beams of Lightning at your spot. Instead of dodging, I suggest just sprinting away to avoid this attack. Staying close to the dragon is preferable, but the monster will sometimes leap into the air and land directly above your head to make you back away.
After you have taken out one-fourth of its health, the Formless One will fly to a high ledge that you can’t reach. Numerous undead creatures will also rise in the boss arena. As if that isn’t enough, it will then shoot Lightning at you. Don’t try to attack at this moment and just focus on dodging.
Before flying down, the demon will create a barrier of lightning around itself. You have to destroy it if you want to reduce its HP. Use Heavy or Charged attacks to quickly remove the shield. The boss will also begin to shoot a steady beam of laser from its mouth. The safest place will be near the boss since the dragon cannot bend its neck that far to reach you.
When you reduce the Formless One’s HP bar to less than half, it will fly back to the high ledge again. This will be a repeat of the previous cycle. Just keep attacking until the boss is dead. However, be wary of the mobs since there will be even more of them in the arena.
Once you have defeated the dragon, ensure you fully explore the area. There are several treasure chests besides the two big ones at the center. One of them contains the unique heavy armor called the Pillar of the Departed.
