In Honkai: Star Rail, every free character awaits discovery as you progress through history. You will need various characters to take on your enemies. Everyone has a unique path, which determines their combat specialty, be it defense, healing, or other methods of warfare. To get the most out of each character, you must master their main attack, skill, talents, and techniques. And the best part? You can build your dream team with eight free characters.
Every Free Character in Honkai Star Rail, Unlocked
First and foremost, you’ll want to focus on progressing through the story. As you do so, you’ll unlock March 7, Trailblazer, and Dan Heng. These characters are all quite strong and will serve you well in battle. In addition, they’re all obtained relatively soon in the game, so you can start building your team quickly.
Next is Asta, which you can obtain by completing the gacha-pulling tutorial. While Asta may not be the most robust character out there, she’s still quite helpful, thanks to her ability to buff her allies’ attack and speed.
If you’re looking to add a fierce feline to your collection, Serval is the perfect choice. You can snag her as a reward for reaching a pre-registration milestone, and she’ll be waiting for you in your inbox. Serval’s electrifying moveset is ideal for players who enjoy shocking their enemies into submission with multi-target lightning attacks that zap foes over time. She can even focus all her electrical fury on a single target, leaving their comrades feeling the shockwaves.
You’ll inevitably cross paths with the masterful mender Natasha as you traverse the plotline. Take advantage of the chance to add her to your squad, especially if you plan to run for it on March 7th. With her expert technique, she’ll strike an enemy while simultaneously placing a weakness debuff on all foes, making her the ultimate support character by your side.

Herta, another free character, is a multi-target attacker specializing in ice. With determination and grit, you can emancipate her from the shackles of Simulated Universe’s second realm without shelling out any cash. If you’re one for savoring the sweet taste of victory slowly but surely, then she’s the hero for you – for when foes hit rock bottom, she unleashes a flurry of finishing moves to seal the deal.
Behold Qingque, the majestic mahjong master that awaits you at the end of Memory Stage 3 of Forgotten Hall. Armed with tiles with quantum abilities, Qingque’s attacks quickly hit multiple foes. She draws tiles randomly, and if the stars align and she gets four of a kind, her attack power skyrockets. Moreover, her technique grants her two tiles from the get-go, giving her an early advantage on the battlefield.
