There are many crafting resources in Dead Island 2, but Mutated Hearts are among the rarest. You can only get them from one source, so once you find them, it helps to farm as much as possible. It’s not an easy feat by any means. There’s plenty to prepare for so that you survive the encounter. We’ll show you where to look for Mutated Hearts and figure out how to use them in the game.
How To Find Dead Island 2 Mutated Hearts
Mutated Hearts are a rare crafting resource you can only loot from one type of zombie: the Mutators. These towering, disturbing creatures are instantly recognizable. Nothing on their body is in proportion. Worst of all, they are split open in the front from the bottom half of their face down to their torso as if their mouths stretched in the worst ways.
You must battle and defeat these creatures to loot Mutated Hearts in Dead Island 2. However, you won’t encounter the Mutator to gain the Hearts until you complete “The Search for Truth” story quest. It is the 21st main mission quest in the game. As such, you shouldn’t expect to gain Mutated Hearts at the start.
It’s with good reason that you have to play Dead Island 2 for a little while before you can fight Mutators for their Mutated Hearts. Mutators are not easy enemies if you’re not prepared. They can quickly cause you a lot of damage if they move in close. So, you’ll want to encounter them with quality weapons and plenty of health to back you up. Maiming weapons work well here to kill them and increase the chance of spawning a Mutated Heart.

One thing you must keep in mind is that Mutators don’t always drop Mutated Hearts once defeated. It’s more of a 50/50 shot. So, there’s a chance it can take you some time to gather the Mutated Hearts you need. But you can farm Mutated Hearts in Dead Island 2. Head to Mutator Hot Spots like the one pictured below:
Use your map to check for Hot Spots. Once you’re there, defeat any Mutators you find. Whether you loot Mutated Hearts or not, reload to the main menu after the fight. Afterward, continue into the game. You will load at the same mansion, and the enemies will respawn. It’s the perfect farming location.
How To Use Mutated Hearts
There are three main uses of Mutated Hearts in Dead Island 2:
- Side quest item
- Crafting
- Selling
The side quest is called “Body Art: Dread,” and Mutated Hearts are a factor for Francesca as she wants three of them. Meanwhile, the most important thing you use Mutated Hearts for is crafting things like the Tear ‘N Sear weapon perk. Selling Mutated Hearts is a last resort if you are in desperate need of cash. This is because the resource is worth more for crafting than selling, as you’ll only get $400.
And that’s everything there is to know about Mutated Hearts in Dead Island 2. Once you get to the Mutator Hot Spot, farm as much as you’d like. It never hurts to have several Mutated Hearts in your inventory.
