We’re back to another episode of weird edible stuff in Elden Ring that you shouldn’t eat. For Shadow of the Erdtree, those two would be the Iris of Grace and the Iris of Occultation. Other than the fact that they’re literal eyeball parts, you also shouldn’t eat these irises because they’re important quest items. But before you ponder on that, you need to find them first. So here’s how to get the Iris of Grace and Iris of Occultation in Elden Ring: Shadow of the Erdtree.
How to Get Iris of Grace in Elden Ring Shadow of the Erdtree
You need to have completed the following requirements to get the Iris of Grace in Elden Ring: Shadow of the Erdtree:
- Defeat the Golden Hippopotamus Shadow Keep.
- Unlock the Storehouse, First Floor (Grace) in Shadow Keep.
There might be a way around the Golden Hippopotamus, but it would be too long or confusing. The Golden Hippopotamus is the shorter (but more dangerous route) to the Storehouse, First Floor (Grace). Once you’ve done that and unlocked the Storehouse, First Floor (Grace), look for this room below, the Iris of Grace is in front of an altar.
The Iris of Grace is in the large room in Shadow Keep with the jar enemies. It’s a dangerous room, by the way, so make sure to run quickly or kill the jar and jar innard enemies before grabbing the Iris of Grace.
Once you have it, keep it in your inventory. Don’t consume it even if it’s a consumable. For it seems there’s only one Iris of Grace per playthrough (though there might be more hidden in the Realm of Shadows).
How to Get Iris of Occultation in Elden Ring Shadow of the Erdtree
Luckily, there are two Irises of Occultation in the Realm of Shadows because you need it for a couple of quests.
I’ll divide this section into the two locations for each Iris of Occultation in Elden Ring.
Iris of Occultation in Fort of Reprimand
This is the easier location since you can access it as soon as you enter the Scadu Altus region. Here’s how to get it.
- Go to the Fort of Reprimand, south of Moorth Ruins (Grace) in Scadu Altus.
- Explore the Fort of Reprimand thoroughly. In the main courtyard of the fort (the one with the gallows for hanging prisoners), there’s a square hole and opening you can drop into. This is the sewers area in the Fort.
- You need to get to the sewers area in the Fort of Reprimand and look for a Lesser Omenkiller enemy.
- Slay this Omen Killer enemy to get the Iris of Occultation.
Again, don’t consume it. You will need it for later and there’s a limited number of them.
Iris of Occultation in Shadow Keep, Church District
The second location is in the initially flooded Shadow Keep, Church District. If you don’t know how to get there, here’s a map (green trail for surface, red trail for underground/indoor):
Once you’re there, these are the steps to find the Iris of Occultation.
- Find the nearby lever in Shadow, Keep Church District that will clear the flood (if you haven’t already cleared it). It’s due southwest of the flooded Church District.
- Once the flood is gone, touch the Sunken Chapel (Grace) below. Walk around the ground area to bring out Lesser Ulcerated Tree Spirits.
- Slay the Lesser Ulcerated Tree Spirit near the center of the Shadow Keep, Church District area (north of the big dead tree). It will drop the Iris of Occultation.
Again, don’t eat the iris. Here’s how to use it along with the Iris of Grace.
How to Use Iris of Grace and Iris of Occultation
It goes without saying, but don’t eat or lose the glowing magic eyeball part. You need to reserve it for a couple of quests. The quests would be Ymir’s questline for which we have a guide and also Fire Knight Queelign’s questline.
I’ll also be dividing this section into two quests. You need to have completed both of these questlines before you can give either Iris.
Give an Iris to Fire Knight Queelign
Fire Knight Queelign will invade you twice in areas around the Realm of Shadow before you find him in the Shadow Keep, Church District’s Prayer Room and you need to defeat him.
The Prayer Room is in the large cathedral west of the big dead tree in the Church District. You need the Prayer Room Key found in Church of the Crusade (Scadu Altus, west) to open the room. Once inside, you can choose to give either the Iris of Grace or the Iris of Occultation to Fire Knight Queelign.
Here’s what you get depending on what you give:
Iris Given to Fire Knight Queelign | Reward |
Give the Iris of Grace | Fire Knight Queelign Ash Spirit |
Give the Iris of Occultation | Queelign’s Greatsword |
Remember, you can only give one. Choose wisely. I prefer the Queelign’s Greatsword so I recommend giving the Iris of Occultation.
Give an Iris to Jolan After Ymir’s Questline
For this one, you need to finish Ymir’s questline first. Here’s our guide to the rather lengthy quest. It involves a couple of boss fights and hard-to-reach areas.
Once it’s done, you need to go back to the Cathedral of Manus Methyr and talk to the dejected Jolan. Again, you can choose to give either the Iris of Grace or the Iris of Occultation to Fire Knight Queelign.
Iris Given to Jolan | Reward |
Give the Iris of Grace | Swordhand of Night Jolan Ash Spirit |
Give the Iris of Occultation | Sword of Night |
It’s up to you again, but I would also prefer the Sword of Night, so give her the Iris of Occultation. It’s one of the best and edgiest katanas in the game.
