Water isn’t just essential in your life. A lack of it can kill you quickly in Sons of the Forest. Finding water should be a top priority. However, just as important is collecting and storing some. You won’t be by bodies of water all the time. As that thirst bar trickles down, you want to learn fast how to always have water nearby in Sons of the Forest. Thankfully, water can come in different forms, freeing you to use more than a single source to stay hydrated.

Everyone’s always thirsty in Sons of the Forest. Which means we should all focus on finding water. Now, you won’t die right away if your thirst stat drops. But do you really want to test just how long you can survive without water in Sons of the Forest? If so, feel free to enjoy yourself. Otherwise, you should fulfill your thirst by first finding a source of water.

Right when you jump-start the game, head inland. Use your GPS to find the nearest bodies of water that aren’t the ocean. Once you reach fresh water, you can satisfy your thirst by drinking from your hand.

Getting clean water in Sons of the Forest functions much like real life: boil it. All you need is a cooking pot. With your cooking pot, head to fresh water and collect it. From there, simply start a campfire, place the pot on it, and just boil the water. Once the lid pops off, it’s done, and you can drink it.

Other Means to Satisfy Your Thirst

Finding fresh water isn’t the only way to sate your thirst in Sons of the Forest. Instead, you can forage for Yarrow, a white plant. Consuming the plant will raise the thirst bar. It’s not nearly as satisfying as water, but it does the job in a pinch. Just be sure you have plenty to consume to feel any real effect.

Also, you can get water in Sons of the Forest by consuming an Energy Drink. It will act like water and improve your thirst stat. You can loot these in the various Abandoned Camps.

As you advance in Sons of the Forest, you can eventually find means to collect and store water. The best thing you can do is build the Rain Catcher. It’s a passive way to always have a helping of water whenever it rains. You’ll need these to construct it:

  • Sticks x12
  • Turtle Shell x1

Of course, that means you must hunt and kill some innocent turtles, but it’s all in the name of survival. Besides the Rain Catcher, once you locate the 3D Printer, you can also craft a Flask. Keep this Flask on you and simply fill it up.

Water isn’t as hard to come by as you may think in Sons of the Forest. Once you find a lake or a pond, you can gather the dirty water with a cooking pot and boil it.

Otherwise, you can set up a Rain Catcher and drink from it or use your Flask to store it. Even foraging things like Yarrow helps. Just do whatever you can to stay hydrated. There’s enough out there trying to kill you that we don’t need to add dehydration to the list.

Sons of the Forest is available on PC.
