Pretty pastel homes are great, but sometimes you want a creepy crib the Addams Family would adore. For that, there’s no substitute for black. The color of night and wilted flowers, there’s no paint on the palette better for the gloomy look. Mojang threw the goths a bone and added plenty of items that you can dye black. Shifting your furniture a few (dozen) shades down the color spectrum isn’t hard as long as you have the right ingredients. Here’s how to make black dye in Minecraft and embrace your inner Morticia.
Minecraft Black Dye Guide
Whether you’re color-coordinating your entire life or just want your candles and walls to match, dye is the way to go. Minecraft is brimming with different dye recipes, and black is about as easy as they get, no cheats needed. There are two different recipes for black dye in Minecraft, and they both only consist of a single ingredient. Here’s what you need to do:
- Get 1x Inc Sac (dropped by squid upon death) or 1x Wither Rose (dropped by mobs killed by Wither)
- Place the Inc Sac or Wither Rose by itself in the crafting grid
- Collect your black dye
You don’t even need a Crafting Table, since you can create this item right from your inventory. Once you’ve crafted black dye, you’ll need to decide what to dye with it. You can use it on leather armor, beds, glass, terracotta, Shulker Boxes, and the collars of tamed animals. You can even dye your sheep with it and later shear them to get black wool. Some recipes (such as the black bed, black candle, and black carpet) require only the base item and black dye to make. Other black dye recipes are much more stringent, so stock up on this pitchy powder while you can.
