One of the coolest Mounts that players are able to ride in Horizon Forbidden West is the Sunwing, a flying machine that absorbs solar energy to power its massive photovoltaic wings. Of course, gaining the ability to fly on a vehicle or creature is not new to the open-world genre, but the idea of Aloy using a mechanical pterosaur to fly across post-apocalyptic California will certainly be appealing to many. Unfortunately, newcomers eager to get their first Sunwing Mount will need to progress through a good deal of the main campaign of Forbidden West, as riding on Sunwings is an activity that players will not unlock until the endgame.
Riding a Sunwing in Horizon Forbidden West
To ride a Sunwing in Horizon Forbidden West, players must first unlock the ability to override the flying machines during a Lv. 30 main story mission known as “Gemini.” Once this prerequisite mission has been cleared, players must progress further in the main campaign to reach “Wings of the Ten,” during which mounting a Sunwing will be a primary objective.

According to YouTuber Zanar Aesthetics, “Gemini” and “Wings of the Ten” take place near the end of the main story. Accordingly, players will gain the ability to ride a Sunwing near the conclusion of Horizon Forbidden West. After speaking with Tilda and Varl, players will proceed to a mountaintop where they will encounter three Sunwings perched near a snowy ledge. This encounter is unmissable, meaning that it is impossible for Aloy to skip the ability to fly on these flying machines. After all, there is a scripted cutscene that occurs of Aloy mounting a Sunwing, further indicating that players will get their chance to fly as long as they progress through the main story.
Overriding a Sunwing in Horizon Forbidden West is the same procedure as taming any other mechanical creature in the open world. Players must cautiously approach the machine from the rear and use Aloy’s spear to pacify the robotic beast. Because there are multiple Sunwings during “Wings of the Ten,” players can slay the extra machines if they require the parts since they only need one alive to ride it across the mountain pass.
Horizon Forbidden West is available on the PlayStation 4 and PlayStation 5.
