Compared to its 2020 predecessor, the Synergy mechanic has been expanded upon in Square Enix’s sequel. Not to be confused with Synergy Materia, which is something else entirely, the new mechanic gives players the opportunity to utilize powerful skills and abilities. But, how do you use Synergy Skills and Abilities in Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth? Don’t worry, we’ll outline how to use them down below. Let’s go!

How to Use Synergy Skills in FF7 Rebirth

To use a Synergy Skill, hold the R1 button (Block) and select the one you want to use from the options in the bottom left of your screen. Offensive Skills are mapped to the Triangle and Square buttons, whereas Defensive Skills are mapped to the Circle and X buttons.

Synergy Skills require no ATB charges to use, but instead fill the ATB gauge when they connect.

Clicking the Touchpad button during combat will pause the game and allow you to see your character’s available Synergy Skills. What Skills are available depends on the makeup of your party. As you make progress through the game, you’ll unlock even more Synergy Skills.

To use a Synergy Ability, you’ll need to have activated enough ATB Abilities to charge the ATB Gauge, which are the rectangular bars below your HP (highlighted in the image below). Every time you use an ATB Ability, one of the rectangles will light up.

While Synergy Abilities require no ATB charges to use, you’ll need to light up enough ATB rectangles to use them. Typically, you’ll need two characters to possess three rectangles to activate a Synergy Ability.

Do note, however, that using the same Synergy Ability will increase the cost of said Ability. As a result, it’s best to mix things up and use a variety of Abilities to help keep combat flowing smoothly.

Lastly, Synergy Abilities apply unique buffs to your party when activated. For instance, Partners in Pain raises Cloud’s and Barret’s limit levels by one, Synchro Cyclone grants Cloud and Tifa unlimited MP for a short window, and Relentless Rush boosts the efficacy and time limit of Staggered enemies.
