A child bringing a knife to school turns from a concerning emergency to a screaming match between school staff at an elementary school in North Carolina. In a story posted to r/Teachers by WillowAny9768, a teacher alleges that a new 6th grader suddenly pulled out a pocketknife in class and began showing it to the other children. The classroom’s teacher had stepped out for a few minutes while Willow temporarily watched the class, and seeing the boy with a knife sent OP into protective mode.
They quickly called administration and had the 6th grader with the pocketknife quickly handled. However, Willow says that, upon being called into the principal’s office, this knife incident had somehow been pinned on them. “She pulled me into her office and began screaming about how I was ‘responsible for that classroom’ and how a student should never have been able to pull out a knife under my supervision,” OP recalled in disbelief.
The heated dialogue only got worse, to the point that the two were allegedly yelling at each other. Things came to a head when the principal threatened Willow, saying she would ruin her teaching career over “insubordination” to her. OP didn’t let her have the last say and made sure the principal knew how they felt. “I’m documenting everything now because I am completely done with this woman,” Willow growled.
This wasn’t the first time this principal had caused OP grief at their school. In a separate post in r/teaching, Willow describes how she has a history of belittling other teachers and allegedly acting irrationally and unprofessionally. “She’s in her mid-30s and talks to grown adults, including people who have been teaching longer than she has even been in education, like we are children,” Willow explained. Needless to say, Redditors in both posts urge OP to take this drama up with HR or a union.
Reddit Praised the Teacher for Standing Up Against the Abusive Principal
Besides suggestions on how to handle her, many commenters praised Willow for standing up to the principal as well. “She’s a professional bully. Period. You spoke for teachers everywhere who are abused in this way by people in power!” exclaimed a user. “I hope that principal gets replaced. She shouldn’t be a principal with that attitude. That student has to be suspended for bringing such knife to school,” remarked another.
As to what happens from here, Willow updated Redditors following their post on the situation, claiming that both they and the classroom’s 6th grade teacher are going to file a grievance against the principal. It’s one step toward seeing the abuse stop in the workplace; after all, many agree that the children should be a school’s focus, not staff drama.
