James Fishback, a Republican candidate for governor of Florida, has recently been criticized online after telling a Black man that he should be lynched. The controversial display of racism sparked debate over the limits of freedom of speech.
The video was originally recorded by the man Fishback offended, the YouTuber TajyTV, and it quickly went viral on social media, reaching accounts such as Republicans Against Trump on X and communities like Reddit’s r/BlackPeopleofReddit.
In the footage, TajyTV can be seen asking Fishback about his alleged relationship with a minor. The Republican candidate reportedly had an inappropriate romantic relationship with a 17-year-old girl in 2022, when he was 27. Visibly angry, Fishback repeatedly asks, “Why haven’t I been arrested?” before pointing at the YouTuber’s face and saying, “You should be lynched.”
After the event, Fishback defended his actions by saying that he supports the First Amendment and that “I don’t regret what I said.” He added, “My view is simple: the word police, the tone police, those days are over.”
This is not the first time Fishback’s words have sparked controversy. Back in February, for example, the Republican blamed the students protesting ICE after a teenage girl was hit by a car during a demonstration.
Internet Criticizes Republican Candidate James Fishback
James Fishback’s words sparked anger in Black communities. A person online argued that “the type of people who argue that they should have absolute freedom of speech are always the people who want to threaten or other people they can punch down at. [sic]” Others agreed, saying, “It’s only freedom of speech if it’s against a minority. If you’re criticizing those in power, it’s terrorism.”
Others seemed saddened that Fishback felt at ease saying that, lamenting that these days, “politicians are saying whatever to get a reaction.” Some also criticized his argument about not being arrested as “the weakest whitest response ever.”
Meanwhile, others reflected on freedom of speech in the United States. One user wrote, “I am OK with freedom of speech. Go ahead, say that stuff, but now let’s have some consequences,” something that they do not believe that the politician will face.
Considering the elections later this year, people may once again see Fishback’s controversial rhetoric as the candidate tries to gain attention ahead of the vote.
