According to the Census Bureau, about 30% of parents owed child support never actually receive payments. So, when one mother from Texas, who was undoubtedly part of that percentage, started getting payments out of the blue, you bet she was excited. And to think her children are almost 30 now. Just imagine how much back pay she’s owed!
TikTok user Amysea23, Amy, shared her recent fortune online, detailing a very common story: she had children with a man who unfortunately turned out to be rather unsupportive. In the caption of her TikTok video, Amy let it be known he “kinda sucked for the 18 years I needed him.” Their twin daughters are now 29 years old.
Naturally, Amy brought a child support case against her ex in 1997 but rarely saw results. The court ordered he pay $65 a week until the twins were 18 years old. Other than the occasional payment, things were overall pretty spotty. So, doing the math, Amy shows that’s in the ballpark of $56,000.
Now, all of a sudden, Amy started receiving child support again even though her daughters are all grown up. One payment was as much as $1,100, which would come as a nice surprise for any (especially with the price of gas). Amy called the courthouse to figure out what was going on. She said she wanted to find out why she was receiving money after all this time because raising twin girls on her own made her feel a little “salty.” She wondered, “Did he get arrested? Did he get a job?”
As it turns out, her ex is now on disability. That means the U.S. government is paying him, which in turn means Amy’s getting paid, too. After all, he can’t dodge the payments now getting paid under the table (just to avoid child support, mind you). Now and likely until he’s all caught up, Amy’s gets $200 every single month. It’s not much, but enough for Amy to laugh and exclaim, “Hallelujah!”
People Online Were So Excited For Amy’s Newfound Fortune
Not only were people on TikTok pretty happy Amy finally got some kind of justice for her hard work raising twins practically on her own, it gave several parents hope that they might get theirs, too. Some commenters also shared similar stories of getting big sums of cash for one reason or another.
“So there’s hope for my $84,000 for the past 20 years!” wrote one mother on TikTok. Others added to the thread, urging her not to close the case. “My father learned a hard lesson when he retired…”, another woman wrote, sharing that her father has 40% of his monthly social security payment garnished. Ha!
One commenter, who claimed they work as a comp adjuster stated child support liens were their “favorite checks to pay.” Even though it takes “extra time” out of her day to make two checks, “Do I love every second of it? Absolutely.”
You love to see it: deadbeats not only getting the negative karma they deserve, but hardworking parents getting the help they needed. Hopefully Amy uses that money to do something nice for herself and her kids. Maybe a nice family vacation!
