Hundreds of mail-in ballots have been rejected in North Carolina under new voting rules ahead of the November midterms, leaving some residents worried about whether their votes will count. In Mecklenburg County alone, 259 ballots were rejected because voters failed to seal an inner envelope, sparking frustration online as Election Day draws closer.
According to Democracy Docket, the Republican-controlled State Board of Elections introduced stricter mail-in voting rules requiring voters to seal an inner envelope before placing it inside a second envelope. The outlet reported that thousands of ballots could be rejected statewide if current trends continue, with voting rights advocates raising concerns that eligible voters may lose their chance to have their votes counted.
Notably, a federal judge declined to block the new rules on October 19, allowing them to remain in place ahead of Election Day. However, affected voters still have options, including casting a replacement ballot or voting in person before polls close on November 3.
For some North Carolina voters, the biggest concern is finding out too late that their ballot has been rejected. Election officials are contacting affected residents and sending replacement ballots, but time is running out. In Mecklenburg County, only 60 of the 259 affected voters had successfully voted again as of October 21, leaving many still needing to take action before Election Day.
North Carolina Ballot Rejections Spark Anger Over New Voting Rules
The ballot rejections have sparked heated reactions on Reddit, with several commenters accusing Republican officials of making voting more difficult. One frustrated user wrote, “Imagine serving your country and they throw out your ballot for some bs politicking. Shameful.” Another sarcastically remarked, “Seems super legal,” while a third questioned, “Republicans do not want people to vote. Why is that?”
Others expressed concerns about the wider impact of the new rules. One commenter admitted, “Just being in the presence of a Republican makes my blood boil,” while another argued, “If you have to cheat to win, you don’t deserve the victory.” However, not everyone agreed with the criticism, with one user pointing out, “If your ballot is rejected because of technicality, you should be notified and be able to vote again.”
With the November midterms just around the corner, the new voting rules have left some North Carolina residents worried about whether their ballots will count. For those affected, time is running out to cast a replacement ballot or vote in person, and with so much at stake, every vote counts.
