There is nothing worse in this world than your own child becoming sick. Having to decide to take your child to the hospital is no easy feat for any parent. What makes this situation even more stressful is dealing with the healthcare system. This can make matters feel fast-paced and expensive for so many. A stressed mother was shocked when a healthcare worker at an Illinois hospital started giving her lip. She believes the way he handled things wasn’t appropriate.
Emari (@emarimikole) took her little girl to Swedish Hospital in Chicago, Illinois, when she was injured in an accident. Emari says her daughter was “denied healthcare because I didn’t answer this man in the way he preferred me to.” It’s normal for a parent dealing with a sick child to feel stressed out. It’s likely that Emari even showed this while at the hospital, and it set off this healthcare worker. Possibly, he was already overworked around the holidays.
The interaction that ensued was quite shocking. The healthcare worker tells Emari, “You don’t have to cop an attitude” after she tells the man that she gave an ID to the man. In a frustrated tone, he then asks her, “What’s your phone number?” She says she already told him and he responds, “No, you didn’t.” When she repeats part of the number to him, he spins around on his chair. He then angrily leaves the room without saying another word.
Commenters were divided on how to feel about Emari’s video. One commenter pointed out that the healthcare worker left his computer “unsecured” and stated that this is a “HIPAA violation.” Another, however, asked, “Why do we never get the beginning, only after they start and want ppl’s sympathy?” We have no idea how Emari may have been treating the worker before the video started. Or, perhaps she started to record him because he was treating her so poorly from the start when she was just protecting her child.
Either way, Emari was able to seek care for her child at a different hospital in the area. In several updates, she shows how she dealt with security at Swedish Hospital after she continued to state that they were “denying” her daughter treatment. If they did, then that’s unacceptable behavior from a healthcare system, and it should never be tolerated.
