While punishment is warranted for those who break the law, inhumane treatment of said criminals should not be condonable. Unfortunately for one particular Illinois thief, he got the worst end of the stick. After being detained for a non-violent Class 3 felony, the convict attempted to end his life by using his turtle suit as a makeshift noose. As a result, he was sent to a different cell on suicide watch. The thief recalls vividly that “for 7 days, I was held completely naked in a disgusting cell, with no bedding, no soap, no toilet paper, and no food or water for at least 3 days.”
And that wasn’t all. The guards who frequently checked up on the convict would mock and laugh at him. “One even said, ‘I am poking you,’ while another remarked, ‘This motherf***er wants war.'” After being mistreated, the Illinois man eventually submitted a FOIA request. Allegedly, he was told that no logs exist about him being withheld food and water. When he requested video footage for proof, he was told that surveillance recordings are withheld for security reasons.
As any reasonable person would expect, the ex-detainee is now seeking possible legal recourse against the jail and authorities who kept him incarcerated. There is one big issue, though: this incident took place back in 2022, meaning the Illinois ex-convict might have “blown his two-year statute of limitations,” as one Reddit user puts it. Another added in, saying, “Dating back to 22, there isn’t going to be video footage for sure.“
While most people would sympathize with the thief’s cause to seek legal action for his mistreatment, one thing stands out that undermines his story. As one Redditor points out, the man claims to have “become delusional and began to hallucinate.” That being said, one commenter believes that makes his testimony borderline worthless. “Representing yourself is not going to work, and no, you do not have a case,” they coldly remarked.
Unfortunately, for this ex-convict, it might be too late for them to have a case, as their recollection could have been entirely and unintentionally fabricated in their head. Not to mention, they waited over two years to seek legal action. Still, the fact that this story might have taken place is shocking and not too far-fetched, knowing how brutal some in the police force can be.
