This week, a protestor at a town hall event in Downers Grove accused U.S. Rep. Sean Casten (D-IL) of facilitating the Palestinian genocide. The protestor accused Casten of taking “a ton of money” from AIPAC and DMFI, two Zionist lobbying groups. He also accused Casten of lying about accepting money from pro-Israel lobbyists. Rather than supporting the protestors in standing against genocide, many in the crowd groaned and booed. The protestor responded by mocking their obsession with staying civil over protecting children. It’s a scene that’s increasingly common under Donald Trump.
Downers Grove Protestor Calls Out Zionism
Protests and town hall events like the one at Downers Grove are happening increasingly. Democrats as well as Republicans are being called out for their support of Israeli human rights abuses including the Palestinian genocide. At first, the Downers Grove protestor pretended to side with Rep. Casten, saying,
There was no reason for these people to get that loud. [….] [E]ven though genocide is happening there, and women and children are getting targeted in Gaza, in Palestine, in the West Bank. We should kind of just put that aside while we talk about other things because they’re not white children and white women. They’re just brown children and brown women.
It seems neither Rep. Casten nor the audience appreciated the sarcasm, but the point stands. The U.S. has an obsession with civility. It’s severe enough that raising one’s voice to speak out against the bombing of schools, hospitals, and tent cities is seen as worse than the bombings themselves. It’s a liberal hurdle that the American resistance to Trump will need to overcome if real change is to happen.
Reddit Reacts To Downers Grove Town Hall
A Reddit post by u/_II_I_I__I__I_I_II_ about the interaction received over 1.9k upvotes and many supportive comments. Several were quick to note how the white boomers in the audience sided with the protestor until they realized he was mocking them. One commenter praised the protestor, saying, “Love this guy. Spittin’ facts.” That included the uncomfortable reality that many of the white faces in the audience appeared unbothered by the thought of dead and displaced Palestinians. As another commenter put it,
So the groans begin with the mention of brown skinned children being slaughtered? Everyone was cool with putting genocide aside for the sake of a happy meeting!
The Downers Grove Town Hall is a symbol of complicated times. While many Americans are happy to blame Republicans for their wrongdoings, some have been reluctant to point the finger at Democrats. Though Rep. Casten has spoken out against the atrocities in Gaza, he also voted for a supplemental military funding package for Israel in April 2024. It’s no wonder some constituents are sick of the charade.
