An Illinois woman faced online accusations of racism after threatening to call ICE on a man she repeatedly referred to as Mexican during an argument.
The man filmed the woman while she was sitting inside her car. The argument appeared to have started before he began recording. At the beginning of the video, she threatened him, saying, “Before I call ICE on your [expletive].” When the man challenged her to repeat what she had said, she did so.
After threatening to call ICE, the woman began yelling at the man to move. Her comments suggested he was blocking her car. The man repeatedly encouraged her to call ICE, but she insisted that she did not care what he was doing. “You are in my way,” she yelled.
As the argument continued, the woman directed racist insults at the man. “Go before I call ICE you [expletive] Mexican,” she told him before adding, “Go back to your country.” When the man continued challenging her to call ICE, she took out her phone and threatened to contact the police. She then repeated her threat to call ICE.
The man eventually walked over to film the woman’s license plate as she continued making threats. While doing so, she showed him her phone to show he was calling the police. He responded by saying he would call the police too. The woman then yelled, “I have to go to work. Get out of my way.” The man replied, “I don’t care.” The video did not establish what led to the initial argument or whether either person was legally in the wrong.
Many viewers accused the woman of racism because she used the man’s Mexican background to insult and intimidate him during their argument. Her threats to contact ICE and her demand that he “go back to your country” led people to criticize her for invoking immigration enforcement while repeatedly referencing his perceived nationality. Viewers also objected to her implication that he did not belong in the United States, regardless of his actual citizenship or immigration status.
Viewers Slam Illinois Woman Over Racist Threat
Many viewers criticized the Illinois woman for threatening the Mexican man and using racist language during their argument.
One commenter expressed frustration with minorities displaying racism toward other minority groups, saying, “All types of racism is abhorrent, but nothing pisses me off more than minorities doing this [expletive] to other minorities. No doubt she’s felt some degree of bigotry because of her race before, but feels the need to subject others to it. Just infuriating.”
Other viewers continued criticizing the woman, with some mocking her threat to call the police and ICE. One person criticized her approach to the argument, saying, “She doesn’t know that screaming at people doesn’t matter.”
The reactions reflected concerns that some people resort to racist insults during everyday disagreements, using another person’s ethnicity to demean or intimidate them. Many viewers also stressed the importance of holding people accountable when they use racism to target others.
