‘I’m Not Losing My Kids Over This’: New York Foster Mother Says Landlord Was Upset She Called 911 Over Carbon Monoxide Alarm

His apathy is disturbing

Sometimes, inconveniences aren’t worth the risk, especially if children are involved, though one landlord in New York seems to think otherwise. A foster mother who goes by SarcasticSeaStar on Reddit shared a concerning story about her apartment’s owner on r/mildlyinfuriating regarding a 911 call. Fortunately, no one was injured, but it was still a notable emergency: her carbon monoxide alarm went off. However, when her landlord heard about it, he was allegedly not too pleased.

It's my *choice* to call 911

It all began when the alarm went off while SarcasticSeaStar was cooking, so she did what any safe parent would do and took the children outside before calling 911. The fire department arrived and confirmed the carbon monoxide alarm’s alert wasn’t a mistake. The stove was determined to be the cause, so it was unplugged, and OP was advised to have an appliance technician inspect it.

When SarcasticSeaStar contacted her landlord about it, his response was apathetic and rather disturbing. “He told me it was my *choice* to call 911 and I could have just stopped cooking and waited to see what happened…” she wrote. Since he was out on vacation and didn’t want to deal with her problem, he asked her to wait to use the stove until he got back. As someone cooking for children, OP wasn’t feeling cooperative in the slightest, and Reddit had her back.

Reddit Opposed the Landlord with the Foster Mother

“So your landlord’s position is that you should potentially risk your lives rather than inconvenience them?” rhetorically questioned a commenter. “Let’s just call these kind of property owners what they are, slum lords,” remarked another. “It was YOUR CHOICE to call 911. . and it was the right choice,” exclaimed a third.

“I’ll add, one of the burners on the gas stove hasn’t been functional since we moved in. The landlord provided me with a lighter rather than fixing it,” SarcasticSeaStar mentioned. “He should act. That’s the right thing to do. It’s not my fault he doesn’t want to do what’s right and send a technician,” she concluded in agreement with other Redditors.

In a now-deleted comment, the foster mother was adamant about keeping her children safe, no matter what. “I’m not losing my kids over this,” she remarked, an attitude that any responsible caretaker should have.
