A New York driver’s morning commute nearly ended in disaster when a cyclist suddenly moved into his path in Oswego County. Dashcam footage captures the driver braking just in time, narrowly avoiding what he feared could have been a deadly collision.

“Didn’t hit the guy, thankfully – but this is about as close as I’ve gotten to actually killing someone,” OP wrote in relief. He clarified that the thumping noise was stuff moving around in the back of his car, not the biker being struck. “If something did happen, it would be 100% his fault,” remarked Goonie. The dashcam captures the close call from the driver’s perspective, but the cyclist’s account of what happened is not included. No collision occurred.

Viewers Blame Cyclist After New York Close Call

Many viewers blamed the cyclist for the close call, arguing that the video appeared to show him moving into the driver’s path without checking for approaching traffic. “Some people have zero situational awareness,” sighed a user, comparing the biker to people blocking aisles at grocery stores to talk to their friends.

“Handled it like a pro though. Way to keep your cool,” wrote another, praising Goonie for his reaction time. “What was he thinking? Better yet. Was he even thinking?” questioned a third.

New York Driver Defends His Reaction After Terrifying Close Call

In the video, OP had some choice words for the cyclist. “I nearly killed the guy. Not worried about his feelings,” Goonie said while defending how he responded.

According to Goonie, the cyclist apologized immediately after the close call. “He was basically like, ‘I’m sorry! I’m sorry!’” the driver recalled. Some viewers believed Goonie’s angry reaction was understandable. “As a cyclist and a driver that was a 100% deserved verbal lashing,” one commenter wrote.

Whatever viewers thought about the driver’s choice of words, the dashcam showed just how quickly an ordinary morning commute could have ended very differently. As Goonie put it, it was “about as close as I’ve gotten to actually killing someone.”
