Hello all, and welcome to The Nerd Stash and to the first edition of “The Indie Corner”! I’m Shelby, and I will, hopefully, have a new Indie Corner up for you all each week. So, what is The Indie Corner all about? Now more than ever, the indie gaming community has developed quite the fan base, and for excellent reasons. Indie games are passion projects; they are projects created with love and care by a small group of people. If you have ever spoken with an indie developer, you know they are some of the most genuine, passionate people around. “The Indie Corner” is here to highlight those people and their projects.
Every week, we will feature an article that we have worked closely with different developers to create. The article will discuss the developers (how they got their start, inspirations, etc.) and their most current projects. At The Nerd Stash, it is important to us that you get the chance to look behind the curtain, and meet the groups bringing you your favorite indie games! And we are always taking suggestions! Enjoy our first rendition of “The Indie Corner” on Semisoft’s Legrand Legacy!
If you have a Twitter and you follow other gaming related profiles, you have definitely seen the promotions for Semisoft’s Legrand Legacy. With all of the hype surrounding the title already, I couldn’t help but dig into it a little more. And let me tell you, I was not disappointed by what I found!

Legrand Legacy is a JRPG, Japanese Role-Playing Game, that takes place in Legrand. You play as Finn, a now slave suffering from a bit of memory loss, that is forced to compete in the fighting arena. Halfway through the battle, Finn discovers a hidden power within himself and triumphs in the fight. Obviously, this leaves some people upset, but you are rescued by a wise, old man, Geddo, before you can be tortured. Geddo hires you as a bodyguard for his travels across the desert. As you travel, you pick up other characters for your party and discover the secret of a destructive prophecy that has the ability to change the entire world.
Other than the amazing artwork, the game stands out in the way of gameplay. While most RPG’s give you the time to think out your strategy, Legrand Legacy forces you into battle with its fast paced turned based system. After you have chosen your desired mode of attack, you must quickly perform a quick time event to decide the strength or accuracy of your attack. These quick time events offer the excitement of a God of War battle without all of the button mashing. This addition to the usual RPG system really keeps you enthralled in the battles and provides a new experience for an old favorite.
The developers took inspiration from some pretty diverse areas, so there is definitely something for everyone in this game. Their inspirations range from Final Fantasy to True Blood and Game of Thrones to even the biblical story of Joseph.
This expansive, innovative JRPG is being created by SemiSoft. The people behind Legrand Legacy are a group of people who grew up gaming and wanted to make a career of it; so they did. The 27 person team has been working diligently on Legrand Legacy since the very beginning in August 2014 and it is their first project together. This team is not only a team of very talented developers but they are pioneers in the area of Indonesia. Not many JRPG’s come from this area, and they would be one of the firsts in the field to build a game like this. If you want to be a part of gaming history, you can help Semisoft by contributing to their Kickstarter. They have two weeks left on their Kickstarter, and they are almost halfway there! They offer many tiers with tons of goodies, and you can even download a pre-alpha demo (that can last up to three hours!) of the game there as well.
If the actual game is anything like the demo, we’re in pretty great shape. For someone that doesn’t normally gravitate toward JRPG’s, this game is a total blast. The quick time events really add an extra element of excitement, and it really keeps you on your toes during battles. Aside from just being really fun to play, the game is great graphically. The art direction from cinematic cutscenes to actual gameplay is just wonderful. The game features different art styles and they all come together to form a wonderful experience. So, if you have the chance, go download the demo for free from their site!
The full Legrand Legacy experience is set to release in September of 2017 on Steam and potentially GOG! Be sure to keep an eye out for more exciting Legrand Legacy news by following them on Twitter.
