Not everyone agrees on Halloween costume choices, and some can be offensive, particularly when they appropriate or mock a specific culture. Another common point of contention is men dressing as women, which many people dislike. In one situation, both of these controversies came together. A man in California noticed a group of men and women sitting together, and one of the women was wearing a Native American costume. Finding it offensive, he spoke up, but the men in the group reacted angrily, with one telling him it was none of his “[expletive] business.”
The California man’s approach annoyed the group, prompting one of the men to respond. Since he had commented on the woman’s costume, her friend decided to comment on his clothes, noting that he was wearing women’s attire. “Are you trans? Is that a costume or is that how you are?” Some social media users viewed the question as transphobic. “Do I look trans?” the man replied before turning the question back on his friend. Throughout the exchange, the woman remained silent while her friends handled the confrontation. “You are offended but you are dressed up as a girl,” the friend added. The man’s clothing wasn’t the only point of contention; the way he ate while talking, with food falling from his mouth, also drew criticism.
The debate over whether the man was trans continued. “Do girls have beards?” he asked mid-bite. The friend replied, “When they take hormones and [expletive], they get them.” By this point, both sides seemed to be escalating the situation with their tone. Eventually, the confrontation began to wind down. The man said he had said what he wanted, and another of the woman’s friends told him, “Now you can get the [expletive] out of here.” He responded that the woman could speak for herself, but the friend quickly shot back that she didn’t want to because he was “interrupting her life.” As he walked away, the friend filmed him, highlighting his feminine outfit.
People Reacting to the California Man’s Confrontation
People had different reactions to what the California man was saying based on the social media platform they were using. On TikTok, the guy was brutally mocked. “His costume is way more offensive,” one person wrote. Women, too, had a lot to say as they felt upset that a man was wearing women’s clothes. “My gender is not a costume.. been saying this for a while,” one woman said. Another woman noted, “As a real woman, I’m offended by his ‘costume’.” From the thousands of comments coming after the man, there were a few that focused on the Native American costume. “The same people embracing the native costume would cry if we dressed up like Charlie Kirk,” someone said. A lot of people also claimed to be Native American and said the costume didn’t offend them.
On the other hand, comments on Reddit were completely different. Some sided with the California man while others blamed both parties involved. “Two people on opposing sides of an argument can be idiots at once. For once, I think this video matches the sub’s name,” one Redditor said. Some comments also criticized the group as someone pointed out that her costume was offensive. “I mean, Native American statements on this do seem to pretty consistently communicate that they see it like Blackface so she is pretty wild for being out in public like that,” they wrote. Another person replied, “Her friend is using trans as a slur. These people are racist transphobic pieces of [expletive] and of course reddit is [expletive] on the drunk guy calling them out.” This situation definitely caused a lot of debate.
