Ever since Marvel vs. Capcom Infinite crashed and burned, comic book fighting game fans have been starving for a proper tag fighter comeback. Sure, there’s been plenty of great anime and platform fighters over the years, such as Under Night In-Birth or the ill-fated Multiversus. Nevertheless, nothing quite scratched that MvC-style comic brawler itch. Now, in 2025, Invincible VS fighting game made its debut at the Xbox Showcase 2025. But depending on who you ask, another game may have already stolen the show.
Based on Robert Kirkman’s hit comic, Invincible VS is a traditional 3v3 comic-book style tag fighter. So far, six characters have been confirmed: Invincible, Omni-Man, Rex Splode, Atom Eve, Lucan, and Thule. Visually, it nails the comic and animated show’s art style in 3D. Models look ripped straight from the pages, punches are meaty, and it might have taken a gory inspiration from Mortal Kombat‘s Fatality. Perfect fits for the no-holds-barred action series.
The catch? The developer, Quarter Up — a part of Skybound Games — has no prior track record. Leaving some uncertainty over whether it can pull off the complex balancing a tag fighter demands.
Meanwhile, remember what was shown at yesterday’s PlayStation State of Play? Yes, Marvel Tokon: Fighting Souls from Arc System Works feels like it’s rewriting the entire crossover fighter playbook instead. Ditching the familiar 3v3 format, it offers 4v4 team battles — something entirely new to the genre. The irony between the two first-party companies’ rivalry is not lost on me.
Then from the roster reveal itself, it already includes eight big names: Iron Man, Captain America, Ms. Marvel, Ghost Rider, Storm, Star-Lord, Spider-Man, and Doctor Doom. What’s more, ArcSys has reinvented all of them with bold manga-inspired designs that breathe new life into Marvel’s decades-old icons. Only in Marvel Tokon Iron Man could appear like a human-sized Gundam.
There’s also ArcSys’ reputation; the maker of two acclaimed, fast-paced anime fighters, Guilty Gear and Blazblue series. Even in the realm of intricate tag team balance, the studio has proven it with a history of licensed games, including Cross Tag Battle and Dragon Ball FighterZ.
Now, I don’t want to be that guy and write it off before launch. There could be a chance that Invincible VS ends up as a solid, long-lasting competitive game. However, it’s clear that those points already give Marvel Tokon an immediate edge in both gameplay expectations and fan confidence.
In another timeline, Invincible VS might’ve been the comic book tag fighter fans were begging for. But with Marvel Tokon already stealing the spotlight, it may find itself stuck playing the sidekick.
