For a parent, nothing is scarier than your child’s life being at risk, which is why an Iowa mother had quite the scare when the ceiling came crumbling down on her toddler. The family had been renting the home for only a month and a half, but already the place was starting to fall apart. Posting to r/Renters, Reddit user Schmidty182 explained how the incident happened around 4:30am when her 8-month-old son was asleep. Thankfully, the baby is reportedly alright, a few abrasions aside.

Hundreds of Redditors found the ceiling’s collapse in the baby’s bedroom quite the cause for concern. According to Schmidty182, the landlady had a roofing worker check the same room a month ago due to water leaking from the ceiling. Clearly, critical repairs are in order if pieces of the home are falling down on the tenants’ children. As one commenter puts it, “You have a major leak, and this is not the end of it.”

Another Redditor parent was in shock that this could have happened. “Thankfully, your baby is ok. As a mom, I would’ve crashed out!” she exclaimed. Schmidty182 wrote in response, “I literally screamed and my husband came running. Gotta see if we can test what fell for lead etc.” Another remarked in frustration at the situation, “I feel like this post isn’t angry enough for what happened here.”

Reddit Urges the Iowa Mother to Take Legal Action Against the Landlady

Dozens of commenters strongly suggest the mother and her husband take photos of everything and get a solid paper trail going, in case they take things to court. Others warned OP from using her crib anymore for her baby. “You don’t know all what fell on them and they should not be used again. There could be major mold or asbestos from the leak and attic,” remarked a user.

Not everyone was helpful in the comments, with one person saying, “Hope the baby is ok. But this is an act of god.” OP replied, saying, “I’m worried about the safety of my family with this roof.” Thankfully, neither of her young sons received any major injuries. Even so, many Redditors agree that “This is like the exact scenario where you must find a lawyer.”
