A woman in Des Moines, Iowa, broke down in tears while sharing that her sister, an innocent bystander and a college student, was shot in the head while at a mall after a fight broke out. She managed to survive the injury, but she is currently fighting for her life.
The woman, Janjay Peters, shared her sister’s heartbreaking story on TikTok. She usually posts lifestyle content online, but the clip in question became her most viral one, garnering 1.9 million views, 499,200 likes, and 21,100 comments.
According to the Iowa woman, on April 19, 2026, she got a phone call from her little sister’s friend, who said her sister, Miranda, had been shot in the head. Janjay detailed that her sister and her friends were at the Ped Mall in Iowa City to get some food. Suddenly, a fight broke out, involving individuals not related to Miranda’s party.
She added that one of the fight’s “participants” was carrying a weapon, further alleging, “He decided to leave the fight and go shoot into a random crowd.”
“She was an innocent bystander,” Janjay wrote in the clip’s description.
Critical Condition
As a result, five people were shot, including three University of Iowa students, as per KCCI. Miranda, one of them, was shot in the head and was rushed to a local hospital. She has remained in the ICU in critical condition for over a week, and she has undergone two surgeries, including a tracheostomy, which went well.
The Iowa woman’s intention with her clip was to bring attention to her sister’s case and condition. While struggling to deliver her message, due to the raw emotions, she believes that the internet can help her sister with her medical bills, so she set up a GoFundMe.
“I’m proud of her in the fight that she’s putting up,” Janjay added. “Our family needs help from whoever we can get help from. […] This doesn’t feel real at all. But it’s real. It’s real.”
Internet Reacts
The video sparked multiple responses online. Many users shared their best wishes with Janjay, hoping that Miranda will survive and heal. One viewer commented, “She will walk out that hospital!! Lord, I pray, amen.” Another commenter added, “In Jesus name SHE WILL BE HEALED.”
Others began answering random questions asked by users to increase the clip’s reach. These included, “What’s your battery percentage?” and “Favorite color?” Others, meanwhile, were devastated to hear the news and the underlying issue, with one viewer writing, “We NEED to end gun violence! Sending love.”
As reported by Iowa’s News Now, warrants were issued for 17-year-old Damarian Marshawn Jones in connection with the shooting. His whereabouts are still unknown.
