This article is over 2 years old and may contain outdated information.

Many players want to know if Cities: Skylines 2 is multiplayer. The game is a follow-up to the city-builder title Cities: Skylines, which didn’t have online functionality. While city simulators don’t traditionally have co-op options, online multiplayer would allow you to create a town with your friends. The developers at Colossal Order have extended the core mechanics of Skylines with the first sequel, but does that include multiplayer?

If you hoped that the sequel would include a multiplayer option, then we have bad news for you. The developers at Colossal Order confirmed Cities: Skylines 2 will not be multiplayer at launch. The company explains:

  1. The game is the most ambitious project from the company, meaning a lot of focus went into gameplay features.
  2. Adding multiplayer support would take away time and resources from the core player experience.
  3. There is no intention to add multiplayer any time soon.

It's wonderful to see all the interest in Cities: Skylines II! 🙌 We'll have much more to share about the game in the future, but let's have a look at the questions we answered in March. 😁#CitiesSkylines #CitiesSkylines2 #CitiesSkylinesII pic.twitter.com/KBmiyxZP87

The original Cities: Skylines is known for not offering an online cooperative option. Nonetheless, you could share your towns with other players via mods. The game requires no online connection to play, allowing you to build your metropolis in peace without the concern of an internet cut-off ruining your progress.

There are mods that fans created you can download to include online co-op in the original game. We have yet to find any mods for Cities: Skylines 2 that would add multiplayer. Nevertheless, we expect there will be a multiplayer mod at some point shortly.

Until then, there are several mechanics and features you can play by yourself on Skylines 2. The city zoning mechanic has been greatly expanded. The sequel now gives you the authority to customize residential and commercial zoning any way you want. You can create new zone types that can be a mix of residential and industrial. Creating more diverse zones will make life easier for the citizens living in your town.

Cities: Skylines 2 is currently only available on Windows PC, with a release date for a PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S slated for the second quarter of 2024.
