New Jersey Sen. Cory Booker posted on X after the Senate confirmed Todd Blanche as attorney general, calling it a “dark day for our democracy” and stating Blanche was confirmed to serve as Donald Trump’s personal lawyer rather than the American people. The post drew strong reactions online, with many users rejecting the description as hyperbolic and another instance of partisan outrage.

This is a dark day for our democracy. Todd Blanche has been confirmed as Attorney General—but let’s be clear: he was not confirmed to serve the American people or uphold the Constitution. He was confirmed to be Donald Trump’s personal lawyer. He will choose Trump’s lies over… pic.twitter.com/I9azJMObvU

— Cory Booker (@CoryBooker) August 8, 2026

In the clip, He describes the confirmation as “really tough,” states that Blanche “will choose” interests over the “Constitution,” and calls for efforts to “hold him” accountable through “hearings” and “a whole scale” response “in our” system.

The accompanying post text expands on these points, saying Blanche “was not confirmed to serve the American people or uphold the Constitution” but “to be Donald Trump’s personal lawyer,” that “He will choose Trump’s lies over the law,” and that “this is not the end. We do not surrender. We fight” to “hold him accountable,” calling the outcome “a setback, not a surrender.” The video does not show the Senate vote itself or events before or after the confirmation.

How Viewers Are Responding to the New Jersey Senator’s Video

Some users rejected the characterization, with one writing, “No, it isn’t a ‘dark day for our Democracy’. It’s just another day of fake outrage by lefty loons like you,” and another stating, “‘A dark day for democracy’?!! Your hyperbole is beyond the pale… Our system worked… perfectly… as designed.”

Others suggested personal motives, commenting that “Booker sounds scared” and that he “may be rattled that HIS crimes will now be exposed.”

A portion of replies aligned with the post’s criticism of Blanche, including remarks that he “thinks he is still Trump’s personal legal counsel” and is “Simply despicable,” while some focused on broader political dynamics, noting that “Democratic leaders have done NOTHING to stop Trump.”
