DC is gearing up for its final DCEU film before James Gunn officially takes over with the rebranded DCU. Today, the trailer for Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom was released with a look at Jason Momoa reigning as the king of Atlantis (see below). James Wan returns to helm the superhero film with screenwriter David Leslie Johnson-McGoldrick to bring an epic scale with hints of horror elements like they did the first time around.
The film follows Arthur (Momoa) as the king of Atlantis and a father. We see him adjust to this new life over the last four years of so much change from where he was in the first film. All of that gets disrupted when Black Manta (Yahya Abdul-Mateen II) returns with a vengeance. He wields a new weapon, the Black Trident, which can mean doom for the people of Atlantis. The footage shows off its lead’s charisma, plenty of action, and Lovecraftian monsters.
Jason Momoa Defends Atlantis in Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom Trailer
The trailer of Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom brings back returning cast members, with some newcomers tagging along. Other returning members with the leading hero and villain include Patrick Wilson, Nicole Kidman, Amber Heard, Temeura Morrison, Dolph Lundgren, and Randall Park. Ben Affleck was supposed to return, but Wan has been tight-lipped about whether we see Batffleck one last time. New additions include Jani Zhao (Jogo Duplo), Vincent Regan (One Piece), Pilou Asbæk (Game of Thrones), and Indya Moore (Queen & Slim).
The time waiting for a glimpse at the film has overlapped with issues from strikes to the trial between Johnny Depp and Heard. Rumors went up about her role in the sequel. As seen in the trailer and Wan’s vision, it was never meant to focus on Mera and instead shift to a dynamic between Arthur and Orm (Wilson).
Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom will be released in theaters on December 20.
