Jennifer Lopez may need to reassess her career following her latest movie flop as she falls deeper into Sean Diddy Comb’s sexual abuse scandal. Weeks back, the actress announced the release of her new movie, Unstoppable, slated for a January 16 release date on Prime Video. The film followed the true story of renowned wrestler Anthony Robles who made it in the wrestling world despite being born with one leg. Co-produced by her ex-husband Ben Affleck the new movie Unstoppable features Jennifer Lopez as Judy Robles, Anthony’s mom who stood by him and encouraged him every step of the way.
Despite the hype leading up to the film’s release and the impressive critical acclaim, the box office numbers have been less than encouraging. Jennifer Lopez’s new movie hit the UK cinemas on December 6, ahead of its official release on Prime Video.
Jennifer Lopez’s New Movie Flops in the Box Office
Surprisingly, the film which featured an all-star cast ended up as the 55th most watched in the UK cinemas, amassing only $3900 at the box office in its opening weekend as reviewed by the British Film Institute. It eventually dropped out of cinemas within two weeks of its UK release.
One insider has claimed that this embarrassing turn of events was in fact the showrunners’ plan for the film, per Mirror. According to the source, the crew and cast members had their eyes set on awards, rather than ticket sales as a means of measuring the film’s success. Hence, letting the movie drop in cinemas was only “a qualifying run” as the official global release date remains January 2025. The source explained,
“The film Unstoppable was released for one week in order to qualify for Awards e.g. Oscars. A lot of streamer films do this in order to be able to qualify for nominations and why there was no fanfare or premiere.”
Fans Make Do On Promise To Boycott Unstoppable Over Diddy Scandal
Despite these claims, Jennifer Lopez, like other Unstoppable cast members has taken steps to promote the new movie. Last month, the 55-year-old actress made a promotional trip to London, even appearing on BBC’s Graham Norton Show to discuss the film. She also shared teasers on her social media page, heightening public anticipation for the movie. Back in October, the star gave a glimpse into the film in a trailer posted to her X account, captioning,
“Prove them wrong. Unstoppable arrives January 16 on Prime Video.”
The post sparked mixed reactions online, with many fans voicing their anticipation for the film’s release. However, Jennifer Lopez’s link to disgraced rapper Diddy reared its head into the new movie as many vowed to boycott it. At the time, many of her fans also predicted the film would flop solely because of Jennifer’s presence. One X user commented,
“Sadly, it would flop because you are in it.”
Another fired,
“Why did they have to ruin this one by having you in it? As a wrestler, they should have vetted you a lot better.”
A third wrote,
“I’ll never watch you or listen to your music again. Thanks for reminding me not to watch this.”
A fourth fan doubled down on the threat to boycott any of Jennifer’s songs or movies, accusing her of “supporting an incompetent lying corrupt puppet.” This movie flop is the latest in a string of career setbacks she has faced this year. Her comeback album This Is Me… Now charted at No. 55 in the UK back in February. Following disappointing ticket sales the star canceled her This Is Me… Live tour across North America initially slated for August. The accompanying film, This Is Me Now: A Love Story did not fare any better. The icon has faced challenges in her personal life as well, most notably, dealing with her heartbreaking divorce from actor, Ben Affleck.
