Cher was not having it with Jimmy Kimmel during her interview about her new book, Cher: The Memoir. The first half of the back-and-forth live discussion was fairly tame, but the late-night talk show host did excessively tease the Goddess of Pop about her first intimate partner. However, the second half becomes rather awkward, as Jimmy is met with a cold yet straightforward remark from Cher during his rapid-fire questioning: “This is so dumb.”
Despite later telling the host that he was “nicer and funnier” than she thought he would be, it was clear that Cher was somewhat irritated by how pushy Jimmy constantly was during the interview. Being professionals, both handled the awkwardness relatively well, but comments were quick to point out that Cher put up with the television host with impressive ease, especially at age 78.
“Cher doesn’t suffer fools, not to say Jimmy’s a fool, but she is definitely liberated from being suppressed,” remarks one YouTube comment. Another chimes in, praising why they love Cher: “She has never been intimidated by anyone and speaks her mind.” Countless other comments share the same sentiment, expressing how inspirational the “Believe” singer has been in their lives.
Cher has been a national icon since the 1960s, and some on Reddit have even argued she’s been equally famous in the modern era. A woman of many talents, the solo artist has been a cultural inspiration for women in the entertainment industry for decades, paving the road for female singers, actresses, and other influencers after her. It’s no wonder the numerous viewers and followers of Jimmy Kimmel Live were so pleased for Cher to be featured on the show.
In Contrast, Many Viewers Showed a Strong Dislike for Cher and Jimmy Kimmel
However, not everyone was amused with Cher’s appearance on the late-night show. A flood of comments on Daily Mail’s coverage of the interview with Jimmy Kimmel is overwhelmingly negative, with many of the critics collectively upvoting each other’s opposing remarks toward both Kimmel and Cher. To start with, one claimed that it’s “time to put a stake through the heart of late night talk shows,” calling Jimmy Kimmel Live a “cringeworthy unfunny” joke. Another seconds the opinion that “Jimmy Kimmel is the worst of those terribly bad late night hosts.”
As for a top comment in the bunch, it reads, “We know more than we like to about the Norma Desmond of pop music. Cher used to be bigger than peanut butter, not so much now.” One user points out how Cher promised to leave the country if Trump won the election, and several followed up, saying that she only stayed because of her “boy toy. A few comments even accused Cher of having her memoir ghostwritten.
Regardless of whether the public loves or hates Cher, she certainly has come a long way in her career. And the fact that she’s still stayed relevant over multiple decades says a lot about her willpower to keep at the celebrity grind. As for Jimmy Kimmel and his “dumb” interview questions, the comment that “these shows have gotten to the point where they’re just sad now” does hold some truth. Otherwise, Cher wouldn’t have bluntly criticized Jimmy’s interview question on air.
