The future has been looking rather grim after Jimmy Kimmel’s show was suspended indefinitely, especially for his cast and crew. However, one town in Newfoundland, Canada, actually went out of its way to provide some semblance of silver lining for Jimmy Kimmel, because in the past, they made Kimmel an honorary mayor of their town, and now they want him back. The catch is that their town doesn’t exactly have the most reputable name: Dildo.
In Canada’s Dildo in the province of Newfoundland, the whole town grew worried after Kimmel’s Late Night show was suspended indefinitely in the US on Wednesday following his criticism of President Trump. Hence, many of Kimmel’s constituents in Dildo are more than willing to have him in their town after this sudden career derailment.
One of the residents even stated that “I can speak for all the people of the community of Dildo that we would certainly roll out the red carpet for him and he’d be welcome, same as he was if he still had โฆ his television show,” so, regardless of whether Mayor Jimmy Kimmel remained a celebrity or not. Still, many residents in Dildo fear that Kimmel’s suspension at ABC might just set a precedent for the future of free speech, especially in the US. And while many of Dildo’s residents were optimistic about Kimmel’s Late Night Show, others think he’d had better freedom in the Canadian town than on US soil. Hence, should Kimmel decide to fully embrace the career shift, Dildo might just be the big change he needs. Moreover, Dildo might just grow into a tourism powerhouse with Kimmel around, at least according to its residents.
People online think Kimmel should continue his talk show work in Canada
Some people on social media, however, think that Kimmel might just get the best of both worlds in Dildo because others are now encouraging him to continue his talk show in Canada. Of course, there would be some logistics problems he’d need to address since most of his crew is in the US, but the idea was well-liked.
A Reddit user suggested, “He should broadcast from Canada I wonder if thatโs even legitimately possible,” and another replied that “I believe Canada does have electricity now.” The US government, which compelled ABC to silence Kimmel, wouldn’t be able to do anything about it, though they could still try to geo-block possible outlets such as YouTube.
But despite rather funny events surrounding the town of Dildo and Kimmel’s involvement with them, other US citizens are worried that Kimmel is only the first of many other censorship efforts from the current US administration. Many believe that free speech in the US is also under a serious threat, just as another Reddit user summed it up: “Most of the country is worried we’ll lose it while a part of the country is worried we’ll get to keep it.”
