Fireworks are no joke. While some people might think they’re just a fun way to add excitement to a celebration, fireworks are essentially mini explosives. That’s why there are so many regulations around them in the U.S. It’s not hard to find news stories about someone getting seriously hurt because of fireworks. For one Kalispell family in Montana, they had a front-row seat to how quickly things can spiral out of control when fireworks are involved.
In a short video recorded by a Ring camera, you can see a father and his son lighting up a firework. At first, everything looks normal. The son lights the firework, then runs to a safe distance, just like you’re supposed to. But within seconds, things take a wild turn. The firework suddenly veers off course and starts spinning uncontrollably in the direction of the garage.
It rockets toward the parked car, narrowly missing it. Then, in an almost cartoonish twist of fate, it makes a sharp U-turn and shoots straight into the open garage. The Kalispell father immediately realizes what’s happening and yells, “Oh sh**!” as he runs inside, likely trying to stop the firework. Unfortunately, that turned out to be a costly mistake.
The rogue firework collided directly with a stack of unused fireworks placed at the garage entrance. That’s when everything went completely off the rails. In seconds, the entire stash ignited. What followed was a mini explosion of light, sparks, and chaos as cakes, fountains, and mortars all went off at once. The entire area lit up as if it had been hit by a fireball.
According to the Kalispell family, the firework that started it all was a small spinning type called Magic Flying Unlimited. Although it ignited properly, it flew sideways instead of upward and somehow managed to land precisely in the worst possible spot. It landed right on top of the stockpile of fireworks. That one moment triggered a chain reaction that turned the garage into a firestorm.
The father ended up with the worst injuries, suffering burns due to how close he was when everything went off. Thankfully, the grandfather, a retired firefighter, was on the scene. He grabbed a hose and did what he could to control the flames until professional help arrived.
Many internet users who saw the video could only shake their heads in disbelief. Some took it as proof that fireworks should be banned altogether. One commenter summed it up bluntly, saying, “So many rookie mistakes here…”
