Karl Urban is set to be the live-action Johnny Cage in Mortal Kombat 2. It was originally reported by The Wrap that he was in final talks. What seemed to confirm the news about The Boys star was the film’s producer Todd Garner sharing the article on Twitter with no other input about the news (seen below).
Gardner is no stranger to confirming major news about Mortal Kombat 2. Alongside Karl Urban as Johnny Cage, we will have some returning stars. The producer tweeted a picture of himself with Chin Han and Joe Taslim, who played Shang Tsung and Sub-Zero, respectively. The latter was quite significant to confirm, as he died in the previous film, but he could be coming back as a new Sub-Zero or Noob Saibot.

The movie star and tournament fighter has been brought to life in movies before. In the 1995 movie, Linden Ashby portrayed the beloved character. Other actors who stepped into the character’s shoes have been Chris Conrad (Mortal Kombat Annihilation) and Matt Mullins (Mortal Kombat Legacy).
Karl Urban has the perfect opening to be Johnny Cage in Mortal Kombat 2. The post-credits scene of the first film saw Cole Young (Lewis Tan) go to Hollywood to search for people to join him in the tournament. We then see a poster for one of the character’s movies, Citizen Cage. By having that setup, The Lord of the Rings actor will get to do another action-packed project with plenty of profanity and violence. He is known for those things with his character Billy Butcher in The Boys.
Production will begin for the sequel next month in Australia. Simon McQuoid is set to return to direct. It will have a new writer with Moon Knight scribe Jeremy Slater. The film has no set release date.
