Keanu Reeves recently spoke with Empire Podcast about a possible return to the franchise of The Matrix following Resurrections. Keanu Reeves mentioned, “If she invites me again, I’m in”. Reeves is only interested in returning if director Lana Wachowski returned to direct the future films. Lana and her sister Lilly were the screenwriters for the first Matrix movie and have since tried to recreate the magic from the first film. The sequels in the trilogy, The Matrix Reloaded and The Matrix Revolutions, had mixed reviews but still remain a classic today.
Unfortunately, The Matrix Resurrections didn’t really land with audiences this time around either. The Matrix Resurrections only got a ‘B-‘ CinemaScore and didn’t do well at the box office its opening weekend. The film was also missing two key actors from the well-known trilogy, Hugo Weaving and Laurence Fishburne.
The Matrix Resurrections opened in theaters and on HBO Max, at no extra cost. It bombed its opening weekend only making $22.5 million. The film was met with mixed reviews and was competing against the highly anticipated Spiderman: No Way Home.
HBO Max has had a tough time this year with their day and date 2021 release strategy. The Matrix Resurrections was their highly anticipated film and didn’t even manage to be one of their successful films. Dune is HBO’s highest grossing day and date movie of 2021, opening with $40.1 million.
The Matrix Resurrections reunites Keanu Reeves with Carrie-Anne Moss, starring alongside Jada Pinkett Smith, Neil Patrick Harris, and Jonathan Groff. While another Matrix movie seems pretty slim right now, there was another idea presented in the podcast: Carrie-Anne Moss could star in future John Wick films? That is a reunion we can all get behind! Reeves asked Moss in the interview: “You want to play an assassin?”
The Matrix Resurrections is now playing in theaters and streaming on HBO Max.
