The Menendez Brothers are finally en route to parole eligibility, and Kim Kardashian couldn’t be happier for them. She dropped the big news in an Instagram Story update, noting Erik and Lyle Menendez deserved to be free.
“The Menendez brothers were granted a second chance at life and will wake up tomorrow finally eligible for a parole hearing. They could be released in as early as 6 months,” Kardashian penned. She thanked L.A. County District Attorney George Gascón for revisiting the brothers’ case and “righting a significant wrong.”
“Your commitment to truth and fairness is commendable,” she noted about Gascón. Her gratitude extended to everyone fighting for the brothers’ freedom, from loved ones to millions of supporters. “The media’s focus, especially on the heels of Ryan Murphy’s TV show, helped expose the abuse and injustices in their case,” Kardashian continued.
She noted that society’s understanding of child abuse had evolved while social media allowed people to question the system. “This case highlights the importance of challenging decisions and seeking truth, even when guilt is not in question,” the reality TV star continued. She reaffirmed her belief in the justice system changing for the better, writing:
“I believe in the justice system’s ability to evolve, and I am grateful for a society where we can challenge decisions and seek justice. Never stop questioning.”
Kim Kardashian Explains Why the Menendez Brothers Are Eligible for Parole
In a separate post, Kardashian explained the reason behind the brothers’ eligibility for parole. She noted their sentence had been reduced to 50 years to life, making them candidates for a 2015 bill.
The California bill reportedly allowed anyone sentenced to life in prison before the age of 25 to seek parole. These inmates become eligible after serving 25 years. “Since Erik and Lyle have been in prison for 35 years, they qualify as ‘youthful offenders,'” Kardashian noted.
The TV personality first echoed her support for the Menendez brothers in an emotional essay to NBC News. She highlighted the alleged abuse that forced them to kill their parents, José and Mary Louise “Kitty” Menendez, stressing:
“Both brothers said they had been sexually, physically, and emotionally abused for years by their parents. According to Lyle, the abuse started when he was just 6 years old. And Erik said his father raped him for more than a decade.”
“Following years of abuse and a real fear for their lives, Erik and Lyle chose what they thought at the time was their only way out — an unimaginable way to escape their living nightmare,” Kardashian claimed. While Kim Kardashian fights for the Menendez brothers through her platform, the D.A. handles the legal front.
George Gascón recently filed a motion requesting their sentences become life with the possibility of parole. If granted, TMZ noted that because of the time the brothers have served could be released from prison immediately.
