Prince Harry‘s planned visit to the UK in May involves more than his commitment to the Invictus Games organization and a royal rendezvous with his family. Last week, news broke that Prince Harry changed his primary residence to the United States per official documents dating back to June 2023.
Notably, this date coincides with the announcement from Buckingham Palace on June 29, 2023, confirming the Sussexes had vacated Frogmore cottage on the King’s bequest. Hence, the royal’s decision to forfeit the UK as a primary residence in favor of Montecito, United States could be traced back to the monarch’s decision to kick him out of his England home.
Prince Harry Can’t Have It Both Ways, Bids Final Goodbye to Royal Life
Royal expert and author Tom Quinn has weighed in on the turn of events. According to him, the Duke of Sussex, who would speak at St. Paul’s Cathedral, London to honor the Invictus Games 10th anniversary intends the UK visit to double as his final goodbye to royal life. While the Invictus Games remains a project dear to Prince Harry’s heart having founded it during his days as a working royal, there was no pressure on him to give it up now even with his change in Primary residence.
However, that’s where the UK hospitality extended to him ends. Tom explained that even if the Duke of Sussex begged to re-enter the royal fold to help out with other things, his request wouldn’t see the light of day. According to him, Prince Harry’s move to choose the US as his primary residence over his native country had a deeper significance that sealed his royal fate for good. The author divulged,
“Even if Harry begged to be allowed back to help out – even if his father King Charles became so ill he was unable to carry out his duties – whatever happens, the call to help will never go out to Montecito. Making the US his primary residence is Harry’s final goodbye.”
The Royals Pulled the Final Straw With Eviction Notice
Tom Quinn also discussed the significance of Prince Harry’s eviction from Frogmore Cottage last year, which ultimately prompted him to officially switch primary residence. Per the royal expert, King Charles’ eviction order was a big slap in the face for Harry, spurring him to reach his breaking point. He noted,
“At the time, few people realised what a slap in the face the eviction from Frogmore felt like for Harry it was the last straw.”
While the news of Prince Harry’s primary residence switch only just became public, it’s been over a year in the making. In March 2023, King Charles reportedly ordered Prince Harry and Meghan Markle to vacate their UK property, with the palace confirming their eviction in June. Despite Harry’s grievances, he turned up for his dad earlier this year following news of his cancer diagnosis.
He’s also prioritized meeting up with King Charles when he visits the United Kingdom on May 8 for the Invictus Games organization’s 10th anniversary. The monarch seemingly hopes for the family reconnection as well, even daring to hope for a reconciliation between his two estranged sons and possibly, meet the Sussexes’ kids. Although the chances of that going as planned are slim, Prince Harry’s primary residence saga is further making it an unattainable dream for the royal family. But then again, never say never,
