Disney really hit all of the marks with its D23 conference. Plenty of news was released, everything from Star Wars (films and theme parks alike) to The Incredibles 2. Arguably, the most anticipated news came from Square Enix as they finally clued fans in on some new Kingdom Hearts 3 information, including a new world and a release window.
Everything was revealed in a new gameplay trailer that was shown at the conference yesterday afternoon. The trailer begins with the normal trio -Sora, Donald, and Goofy- zooming around Mount Olympus as they fight off various forms of the Heartless. It then takes a drastic turn as things slow down and our heroes find themselves in a child’s bedroom.
Sora, Goofy, and Donald are sporting a new plastic look as Woody, Buzz, Rex, and other toys from the Toy Story cast step out to greet them. As the things continued, Sora even gets to hop into a mecha-looking Heartless to take out the rest.
This is the first time that a Disney-Pixar film will be featured in the Kingdom Hearts universe, and it is safe to say that everyone is on board. It is still unclear as to whether or not Toy Story will be joined by other Pixar films at the moment. Other worlds that have already been announced include Hercules, Big Hero 6, and Tangled. The new trailer even shows some off some new exciting weapons, and fans are ready to see what else the developers have up their sleeves.
Last, but not least, fans of the series can expect the newest game in the Kingdom Hearts series to drop sometime in 2018 for the PlayStation 4 and Xbox One. After 12 years of waiting, I think we can all agree that this is better than nothing! Now, here’s to hoping there won’t be any further delays.
