The latest season of Sister Wives is bringing closure for much of the family (and fans). While fans know that three out of four wives have left, viewers are still seeing this unfold on television. Apparently, Meri and Kody Brown have two different takes on how their split occurred.
Kody Brown Saw the Divorce as Legal Paperwork
Meri and Kody Brown pursued a legal divorce after Kody brought Robyn Brown into the family. This was so that Kody could marry Robyn and legally adopt her children. During Sunday’s episode, the former married couple revisited their divorce.
In a confessional, Meri explained the situation. She said, “When Kody and I got the legal divorce, it was something that we had talked about together for years. But at the time that it actually happened, I was the one who made that move and went to go talk to the lawyer first because I was just in a place of let’s just do it, let’s just rip the Band-Aid off, let’s just get it done.”
At first, Meri admitted that she wanted her relationship with Kody Brown to be stronger before they moved forward with the divorce. However, things swiftly changed once Robyn was introduced into the plural family.
Kody saw things differently. He seemed to look at the entire situation in a more legal and practical manner. The Sister Wives star said that Meri came to him and proposed they get a divorce so that he can legally adopt Robyn’s children. “In my mind, we were just shuffling a legal paperwork,” he said. After the divorce was filed, Kody says that he and Meri had some alone time together.
“Meri and I, after that divorce, left Robyn and went to dinner together. I gave her a special ring and we probably went home and made love,” he said in a confessional. “I mean, I’m just like going, ‘We’re not breaking this up.'”
The Wives Weigh In on the Divorce
Meri Brown heard about Kody’s recollection of the events surrounding their legal divorce and was shocked that he’d mention anything about a possible hookup. “I think it’s kind of disgusting that he would bring up a potentially intimate moment with somebody that he’s divorced from because I can guaran-damn-tee you that he would never talk about those moments in this setting with his wife,” she said in a confessional.
She also noted that she and Kody Brown were not at a place in their relationship where any hanky panky would’ve been happening anyway.
Deflecting responsibility, Kody brought up the “catfish incident.” Meri pointed out that the catfishing incident where she got caught chatting with someone online didn’t happen until eight months after their legal divorce was settled.
The other wives didn’t understand the move at all. Christine and Janelle Brown were both surprised.
“I was actually sort of speechless when she told us that she was actually doing it, because I thought, ‘Meri would never do this,'” Janelle said. “I already had started to see that there was a little bit of favoritism for Robyn from Kody at that point, and I did worry.”
Christine, on the other hand, saw that Robyn was planting the idea that Kody Brown should adopt her children. She brought up several other instances when divorce occurred for adoption purposes. “I don’t think Meri felt like it was planted. I think Meri felt like it was her own idea,” Christine said.
Robyn shut down Christine’s claims, stating she’s never heard of that happening and wouldn’t have mentioned it. “I was very happy and content with my spiritual marriage,” she stated. “I didn’t need anything else.”
Of course, Kody Brown blamed everything on Meri and how her “attitude” changed.
