Las Vegas Dream? More Like a Trap, Says Fed-Up Local: ‘It’s Going to Get a Lot Worse’

What a terrible situation to be in

It’s hard making a living out here. No matter where in the United States you are, it’s becoming increasingly difficult to even qualify for a job, let alone be interviewed for one. This isn’t because there aren’t candidates qualified for the job; it’s because companies are either looking for incredibly specific candidates or ones who have no qualms about moving to another country on a promise that a job might be waiting for you. However, one Las Vegas, Nevada, man is really feeling the weight of being unable to provide for his family.

Don’t move here

After having relocated to Las Vegas, Nevada, with his wife, the original poster of the above thought it would be easy to find a job in the massive city. However, a month into his search, he’s no longer sure how long he’ll be able to keep it up. He’s claimed to have been through 20 interviews across the more than 400 applications he’s filled out, with not one job offer. He even discloses to applying for positions at fast food restaurants and department stores like Walmart. Unfortunately, commenters weren’t very optimistic about the poster’s chances of being able to find a job any time soon.

“It’s going to get a lot worse.”

Many other Redditors shared their own stories of moving to a new state with a job lined up, only to be laid off months later. It seems that various people across the country have been put into financial despair at the hands of former employees who had originally promised those people permanent roles that could justify those moves. It appears that no matter how prepared you might be to start your life anew elsewhere, life will still manage to throw you a curve ball.

The original poster mentions that he is a veteran with a variety of experiences, yet he is still struggling to find work. He concludes by saying, “It isn’t what you know; it’s who you know.” Unfortunately, he’s absolutely correct in this regard. More and more businesses seem to prefer hiring friends or acquaintances of their business partners rather than individuals who are genuinely qualified for the job. I recall having an employer who only hired candidates based on their attendance at their local church. It’s safe to say we had a massive turnover rate.

Hopefully the poster is able to get back on his feet soon enough with a great opportunity. It’s truly devastating to see that there are people who can fill out five to ten applications every day for months and never hear a word back.
