President Donald Trump’s recent aggression towards immigrants from Latin America has invited more widespread protests about migrant rights. In turn, these protests have attracted actual people who are more than willing to share Trump’s outlook toward immigration. One recent protest in Texas was disturbed by a man shouting racial slurs at the immigrant rights protesters.
The incident took place in Lubbock, Texas, around March 15. Local activist Anne Keel organized a protest at Tim Cole Memorial Park after 11-year-old Jocelyn Carranza from Texas committed suicide due to immigration-related bullying and deportation rumors. All was going well in the protest until a man driving a car with no license plate pulled up and started shouting racial slurs at Keel’s group.
The man wasn’t content with his actions and parked nearby to get out of his car and challenge the protesters to a shouting match. The protesters immediately branded the man as a “Nazi piece of sh*t!” and as soon as the man got off his car, he shouted in response creating “Get the f**k out of my country!” at the protesters, some of whom were waving Mexican flags for their awareness protest.
Anne Keel and the protesters quickly surrounded the man and shouted him down, though no actual physical contact took place. Thankfully, there were police present in the area and promptly drew away the heckler. Protesters were also quick to point out to the police that the man had no front license plates on his car, which is punishable in Texas.
According to the protesters, the man hurled racial slurs like “wetbacks” which are for Mexicans living in the US. While no one was physically hurt in the process, some have brought up concerns about protester safety in the US.
The Racist Wasn’t Even from Texas
The LPD ran the plates for the racist man and actually confirmed that he wasn’t even from Texas. It could be possible that he was personally hunting down small protest groups to heckle them or that perhaps he was merely passing by. However, it was unclear whether charges were pressed or how the police handled the out-of-towner.
One thing was clear, however: people online quickly stereotyped the protest heckler, especially with his haircut and manner of appearance. Some pointed out the SS haircut while others noticed that the man’s zippers were open, which likely led to the insults from the protesters about him having a small genital.
