With the rise of authoritarianism under Trump’s rule, more and more people have begun expressing their protests and dissatisfaction. The biggest movement has definitely been the recent No Kings rallies held across America. Still, there are other, quieter ways people are showing their defiance. One of the boldest examples is a mysterious statue that suddenly appeared on the National Mall in Washington.
The statue features the Statue of Liberty’s head being crushed by an enormous thumbs-up gesture. Her face is cracked down the middle, her crown broken, a striking visual commentary on the current state of America.
The pedestal beneath her broken head bears quotes from some of the world’s most notorious dictators, from Vladimir Putin to Kim Jong Un. Kim’s quote reads, “Your Excellency, a ‘special’ relationship. The extraordinary courage of President Trump.” Putin’s quote is shorter, simply calling Trump “a very bright and talented man.”
Since its appearance, countless passersby have paused to take a closer look. Many snapped photos of the fractured Statue of Liberty. Others, including international visitors, seemed reluctant to comment, uncertain whether they were even allowed to express an opinion.
Despite its provocative nature, the statue was not placed there without proper authorization. The artist filed a formal application with the National Park Service. According to the document, the statue is meant to draw attention to the rise of autocratic and oppressive imagery in American public life, specifically referencing the military parade planned for June 14. The artist hoped to highlight how authoritarian leaders around the world have openly praised Trump. The artist’s name has been withheld, likely to protect their privacy.
Aside from visitors and passersby at the National Mall in Washington, the new statue featuring the broken head of Liberty has also drawn significant attention online. Many people felt the artwork was fitting for the current political climate. One user commented, “I hope it’s very heavy and difficult to move,” likely suggesting they believed the statue was installed without official approval and could be at risk of removal. It might also be a concern that someone who disagreed with the message might try to destroy it.
Some remarked that calling Trump a dictator would only flatter him and argued that such labels should be avoided. A few wondered whether the new Washington statue would catch Trump’s attention and lead to a demand for its removal.
One user wrote, “Yeah… Trump and his followers like this shit. They’re proud of it.” The online reaction, like the public one, has been mixed. That may have been the artist’s intention all along, using the statue to spark conversation about the state of American politics.
