Although Kwame Appiah said “Yes” to marrying Chelsea Griffin during Love Is Blind season 4 finale, there are sure signs the relationship might not last. Kwame’s season kick-started with him establishing two formidable bonds through the Netflix pods. He connected with Micah Lussier and Chelsea but ended up with the latter.
Despite his apparent preference for Micah, and genuine desire to engage her, Micah felt more aligned with Paul Peden and accepted his proposal. In the end, a somewhat heartbroken Kwame was able to pick up the pieces and eventually got engaged to Chelsea. Surprisingly, when they met, sparks flew almost instantly between Kwame and Chelsea.
Kwame was ready to commit, and so was Chelsea, who willingly agreed to his proposal. What followed was the traditional honeymoon peculiar to Love Is Blind. However, the two soon began to hit a few road bumps. During the season’s honeymoon phase, Micah and Kwame crossed paths at the pool party, and the duo had a rather lengthy conversation, leaving Chelsea feeling slightly uneasy. Despite the awkwardness of the whole situation, Kwame and Chelsea managed to hold on to each other.
They quickly resolved things, and Kwame assured Chelsea of his commitment. After getting that out of the way, it was back to real life for Chelsea and Kwame, who had to deal with issues like moving in together and advancing their lives as a couple. Throughout their discussions, Kwame was quite open about how much compromise he would want to make, especially about their moving in together.
However, Chelsea never paid attention to his concerns. Due to her behavior, many Love Is Blind fans predicted Kwame would leave Chelsea at the altar. However, Kwame surprisingly said, “I Do.” Nonetheless, there are still certain ominous signs that might hinder the progress of their romance.
Kwame’s Reluctance To Fully Commit
Since his debut, Kwame has created a reputation for not hiding his feelings. From the start of the season, he was clear about his feelings for the women he met in the pod. But after striking a connection with Chelsea, Kwame has always seemed hesitant to go all in.
In a confessional during the season, Kwame talked about having an instant spark with Chelsea; he even likened it to a reflex, something he would never have had with someone else, say, Micah, to who he was initially attracted to. However, one thing is sure, Micah is still a constant feature in their romance. Not that she has troubled the couple, but Kwame admitted he would always hold her in his heart.
“I think we had a great relationship in the pods, and that’s what I meant [by] ‘She has a special place in my heart.”
He also once referred to Micah as his soulmate. At first, he claimed that she was his everything after meeting her in the pod, but when she went for Paul, he still spoke about her like they were meant to be. Even when the couples were in Mexico, Kwame found it challenging to dismiss Micah’s beauty. The two constantly flirted with each other, with Kwame later confessing,
“She’s really beautiful, you know. I’m attracted to her. I’m attracted to her, I’m sorry.”
Even at Chelsea’s birthday bash, the duo shared a heart-to-heart conversation where they questioned their current connections and leaned on their past bond. Besides that, Kwame showed some hesitancy before saying “I Do,” and fans don’t think he feels fully tuned into the relationship. The Love Is Blind star still seems to hold Micah in his heart, and she might later become a problem.
Chelsea’s Inconsiderate Behavior
The second red flag is Chelsea’s self-absorbed behavior. Over time, she has proven to be more of a talker than a listener, and it is not surprising that it makes her look selfish and less empathetic. Chelsea does not go the extra mile to validate Kwame’s feelings. Whenever he talks about making a compromise, she speedily responds with an answer that dismisses his feelings and upholds her banner of “marriage comes with great sacrifices.”
Interestingly, Kwame does not treat Chelsea the same way. It’s the direct opposite. Kwame talked about the possible sacrifices he would have to make to ensure their romance worked, and instead of showing gratitude, Chelsea made him feel like it was a duty. She’s someone who just wanted the marriage at all costs. Chelsea has been open about walking down the aisle with that special someone but has never shown the maturity expected in a partnership or relationship.
Thinking about herself alone will not be enough to sustain a healthy marriage. But while that might have been something they could quickly work on, Chelsea never reasoned with Kwame. Instead, she got defensive, gaslighted, and even hurled insults when he tried to address some issues. Like Chelsea, Kwame has remained consistent in his behavior. He constantly talks to her about things he does not fancy.
In the last few episodes, he was vocal about his feelings and boundaries, even though Chelsea was super dismissive and nonchalant. Kwame was honest when he admitted that Chelsea made him feel like the “bad guy” because of her behaviors, adding that he was losing himself to fit in her space. Kwame knows no one in Seattle, while Chelsea has her family there. But such a one-sided atmosphere is unconducive for a marriage to thrive.
Love Is Blind Kwame and Chelsea’s Conflicting Future Goals
Kwame and Chelsea seem to have opposing future goals for two people who just got married. Chelsea clearly shows that she is in the game for marriage purposes. Nevertheless, she has been misplaying it — articulating how important marriage is, even though her actions are not matching her words. On the other hand, Kwame has proven how uninterested he is in her idea of a perfect family life.
Shockingly, Chelsea has refused to see the handwriting on the wall or even try to understand his perspective. Chelsea dreams of a home and family, including kids. On the other hand, Kwame feels ready for marriage but does not buy the idea of having kids almost immediately. He still intends to have fun with his partner without worrying about little humans. Kwame’s mother has also refused to bless the union, as she would prefer he takes a Ghanaian bride.
Although some of his relatives were at the wedding, the couple didn’t receive Kwame’s mother’s blessing. This upset Chelsea, who did not believe her lack of approval would get in the way, but they moved on with the wedding. Kwame claims he loves Chelsea but still seems powerless to do anything about the red flags plaguing their relationship. One of the most vital ingredients in a relationship is communication and compromise.
Throughout their courting period, Kwame tried as much as possible to get his wants, goals, and concerns across to Chelsea, but she rebuffed all of his attempts. Her preference to get married and figure out things later might eventually bite her. However, she will only have herself to blame when that happens. Expectedly, there is still so much buzz surrounding the future of their romance as Love Is Blind fans wait to see what will become of the contentious duo.
