Despite the criticisms Paul Peden faced for dumping Micah Lussier, the Love Is Blind season 4 star had genuine reasons behind his decision. When Love Is Blind season 4 premiered on the 24th of March 2023, the series promised to deliver the best seasons in recent memories. By the time the season finale aired, Netflix had delivered on its promise. Besides featuring some of the most dedicated cast in the series’ history, Love Is Blind season 4 also produced the highest number of eventual married couples. However, the only couple to walk away at the altar, Paul and Micah, were also some of the central figures of the season.
Paul and Micah’s Love Is Blind Romance
Love Is Blind season 4 opened fans to quite several connections in the pod. Micah hit it right away with Kwame Appiah and Paul Peden. But in the end, it was down to picking just one man. Despite Kwame professing his love for her and intentions to engage Micah, she chose Paul over him. However, as they prepared for their big day, it was evident that Micah had reservations about her relationship with Paul.
Although the two managed to keep their romance going until the finale, Micah was quite open about her and Paul’s differences — echoing why they might not be the perfect match for her family and friends. Their differences were laid bare for all to see on their wedding day. Micah and Paul reached the altar, and as it was time to share their wedding vows, fans got what everyone had been anticipating all season — chaos! As the crowd focused on Micah to say her “I do,” she shifted the attention back to the groom, noting that she wanted him to answer first.
With his back finally against the wall and nowhere to run or hide, Paul finally did what fans expected he should have done a long time ago when he said “no” to Micah at the altar. Micah couldn’t handle the rejection in front of her family and friends and left the altar in tears. After speaking to the cameras, Paul admitted he made his decision because he did not see Micah becoming a “nurturing” mom. However, while the Love Is Blind star raised a couple of eyebrows with his comments, several clues show he made the right decision.
Paul Made a Mistake Choosing Micah on Love Is Blind
Love Is Blind season 4 came with its fair share of surprises. However, despite how tricky it looked, only one couple, Paul and Micah, walked away from the altar. Although their dramatic split surprised several people, it was perhaps the bravest and most real thing Paul had to do. The pair couldn’t work, and Paul realized he had made a mistake choosing Micah in the first place.
During their time in the pods, the duo seemed connected to other people. Due to their flirty discussions, Micah and Kwame looked like a guaranteed couple, and Paul chased Amber Wilder. However, Paul and Micah’s decision to couple up came out of nowhere and was the first suspicious indication of how their relationship might end.
However, the obvious dissimilarity between the two became even more apparent as the season progressed. Micah could never resist openly flirting with Kwame anytime they met, while Paul struggled to exude the same feeling from her. On top of that, Micah and Paul always disagreed on similar values and principles. Micah was very contentious as opposed to Paul’s meek personality.
This difference showed in nearly every aspect of their decision-making as a couple. Crucially, the two never agreed on important things like where they would eventually settle down — with Paul quite content living in his Seattle space. At the same time, Micah wanted a bigger apartment in Arizona. All these and more probably contributed to the reason he broke off the marriage.
Micah’s Mean Girl Attitude Didn’t Help Her Relationship
Micah’s controversial behavior and mean-girl attitude contrasted with Paul’s easygoing character. While Micah may not have wanted to earn the villain tag by first saying “I don’t” to Paul at the altar, she would have benefited if she had displayed the same restraint earlier in the season. In the early parts of season 4, Michah caused a lot of havoc on the show alongside her one-time BFF Irina Solomonova, which deservedly earned them a “mean girl” status.
During their reign of terror, the two regularly poked fun at their romances and other women while staying at the women’s living quarters during the pods’ stage. On one occasion, Micah got Irina to spy on a heartbroken Amber after Paul dumped her. Fans then watched the girls laugh at Amber as she reeled from the pain of her rejection from Paul. Love Is Blind fans widely condemned this behavior and slammed the girls for bringing negative energy to the show.
Quite interestingly, Micah would get a dose of her own medicine later when Irina flirted with Paul during their Mexico trip. This didn’t go down well with Micah, who confronted Irina about it. However, Irina showed no remorse for her actions and responded to Micah very coldly. Ultimately, the women apologized to fans and their co-stars for behaving immaturely. Unlike Paul’s kind-hearted nature, Micah showed that she could be very mean.
Micah’s Questionable Choice of Friends
One thing that became a common theme about Micah during the season was her behavior around her friends. She displayed a better personality whenever she was with Paul or his mom, Elizabeth. However, with her friends, things were starkly always different. Apart from running the mean girls’ camp with Irina on Love Is Blind, Micah’s real-life friends, Shelby and Micayla, were also of questionable character. Interestingly, Micah always seemed ready to do their bidding or stand up for them no matter what was at stake.
Micah’s besties were mean and judgmental, and they tried so hard to convince her that Paul was not right for her. Additionally, Micah did not appear bothered when Shelby criticized her beau in front of her. Instead, she tried to ward off Paul in Shelby’s defense. Shelby proved that the fans weren’t wrong about her when cameras caught her in a buoyant mood after Micah got dumped by Paul. The TLC cameras showed Shelby with a wide grin on her face. Later, during a confessional, Shelby confirmed that Paul’s decision sat well with her. She chimed,
“[I feel] relieved, honestly. That’s how I wanted it to go.”
Another red flag that proves Paul might have dodged a bullet was that Micah did not respect boundaries with him. Despite their engagement, Micah continued her connection with Kwame even though it displeased Paul and Chelsea. The most telling discredit to Micah’s personality is how she welcomed Irina back with open arms after her shenanigans with Paul. This passed her off as a people-pleaser.
Paul and Micah Had No Chemistry
One of the most concerning things about Paul and Micah’s relationship during Love Is Blind season 4 was their apparent lack of chemistry. Although the duo spoke about some things they liked in common during their time in the pods, their chemistry never got past the type between mutual friends. Unlike some of the other Love Is Blind season 4 couples, Paul and Micah never looked like genuine couples. They rarely spoke with enthusiasm about the type of future they wanted together. Instead, the two looked like two friends just on vacation together.
They barely interacted with each other during and after their Mexico getaway. Instead, Micah visibly flirted with Kwame while Paul was busy developing a bromance with Zack. Their communication problems worsened as the season progressed, and it became clear that they were too different to work.
It was quite suspicious seeing the introverted environmental scientist with a humble aura connect with Micah, a woman with an outgoing personality obsessed with a party life. Although Paul could have handled things better, not marrying Micah was the best decision he could have made.
