People who go to college are expected to be well-educated and open-minded individuals: people taught to think critically and show understanding toward others. Yet small-mindedness and bigotry aren’t things that can be easily shed. For one Black student attending LSU in Louisiana, that truth became painfully clear when she had to deal with a very aggressive and racist dorm neighbor. Now, this LSU student wasn’t exactly brave, as she never dared to say slurs directly to the Black student’s face. What she did instead was stand outside the Black student’s room and shout those slurs loudly from the hallway. Fortunately, the Black student had installed a Ring camera at her door, which perfectly captured the incidents.
Aside from yelling racial slurs, at one point the racist LSU student also shouted about how she didn’t care about the tragedies and the terrible history of Black people who were enslaved by white people. The Black student, who goes by the username kkariilostfiles, eventually confronted the racist student. The racist student immediately backtracked, claiming she wasn’t saying those horrible things to the Black student, despite being caught on camera shouting directly at her door and facing it the entire time.
Tired of the constant harassment, the Black student reported the incidents to the police. The officers later confronted the racist student, who lived right next door. You could hear and see the confrontation clearly in the video. The officer told her that she was “on thin ice.” While she wasn’t arrested, the officer explained that there was now a paper trail documenting her harassment. The only reason she wasn’t facing more serious consequences was because, technically, the slurs were said to the Ring camera and not directly to the Black student. The officer warned that if she continued her harassment, she would have to deal with the police again.
Internet users who saw the video were furious. Many criticized the LSU student for her cowardly and hateful behavior. The fact that she immediately backtracked when confronted just showed how spineless she really was. “Racists are always cowards,” one user wrote. Others remarked that the police officer was surprisingly patient and calm while explaining just how badly the LSU student had messed up with her words.
It’s unclear whether the LSU student will actually change her attitude. “She’s just lucky she’s dealing with someone patient,” one commenter wrote, adding, “’Cause baby…” Others, however, felt like she got off too easily and should face real punishment. “She’s never been held accountable. Her parents let her get away with everything,” one user commented.
