Governor Janet Mills of Maine has inserted a condition in her state budget proposal stating that Maine taxpayers should compensate for losses incurred by any industry or contractors that lose federal funding while the Trump administration is cutting back on Medicaid fraud. The requested budget has caused massive criticism on social media.

The proposal is directly in the middle of a federal investigation into MaineCare, the Medicaid program in Maine, which has found tens of millions of dollars in fraudulent payments.

🚨 HOLY CRAP. The Democrat Governor of Maine Janet Mills just filed to GIVE BACK any taxpayer dollars to fraudsters if the Trump administration defunded them during the crackdown

She is LITERALLY using taxpayers to fund ADMITTED fraudsters.

The post, shared on X by user @EricLDaugh, features a video clip of Fox News host Kayleigh McEnany discussing the budget language.

In the clip, McEnany states that a provision buried in Governor Mills’ proposed budget would put Maine taxpayers on the hook for any business or provider that loses federal funding as part of the Trump administration’s crackdown on fraud in programs such as Medicaid. The video does not show the full budget document or the exact wording of the provision.

According to the original X post and supporting reports, the measure is part of Maine’s broader response to federal audits of MaineCare, the state’s Medicaid program. A federal audit had previously flagged at least $45.6 million in improper payments, primarily related to autism services. Governor Mills has described federal actions as politically motivated, while the administration has pushed for stronger oversight and potential funding adjustments.

Maine Budget Provision Triggers Strong Reactions Online

The video prompted reactions online, with many commenters focusing on the use of state taxpayer funds.

One user wrote: “These corrupt politicians must be STOPPED. Prosecuted and jailed. ENOUGH of this corrupt shit.”

Another stated, “Why are these blue states getting 1 penny of my tax $$??? Communist criminals run them, and they are insurrectionists. Defund. Defund. Defund.”

A third comment read: “WTH? Why is Maine allowing this? Totally bonkers and a slap in taxpayers’ faces.”

Others expressed similar frustration, with one writing, “Mills to Maine taxpayers~ ‘Trump cuts fraud funding? Cool… we’ll rob you to refill it.’ She’s NOT governing. She’s immensely laundering the GRIFT through YOUR PAYCHECK.”

The story has drawn attention due to the timing of federal fraud investigations into state Medicaid programs and the direct question of whether state budgets should backfill losses from federal defunding actions.

The video clip has sparked a broader online conversation about how states should react when federal funding streams are being reviewed and the potential obligations of taxpayers. The proposal is still on the table as Maine lawmakers debate the state budget.
