Malia Obama is doing things her own way as she grows in her film career. The eldest daughter of Barack and Michelle Obama towed a different path from her parents. As a result, she has had to step out of her comfort zone. The 26-year-old recently granted an interview, something she has almost never done since being in The White House.

The former first daughter attended the 50th annual Deauville American Film Festival in France on Saturday. For the grand event, Malia showcased her unique fashion style, rocking a plaid two-piece ensemble featuring mismatching red, white, black, and blue checkered patterns. The outfit comprised a cropped corset with a sweetheart neckline and off-the-shoulder sleeves. It was paired with a matching layered skirt featuring a floor-length column silhouette of two separate plaid prints. Malia finished off her look with a pair of knee-high black leather boots and simple silver hoop earrings. Her hair was styled into brown boho braids, and she wore minimal makeup. While on the carpet, Malia surprisingly chatted with Paris Match about her presence at the prestigious film event.

“I’m so excited. I mean I’ve never done anything like this, so it’s like a little bit terrified. But mostly just excited.”

The Harvard alum also dished on her look, revealing it is a Vivienne Westwood piece. “I don’t know as much about fashion, but I’m happy to be wearing it,” she gushed. Per Harper’s Baazar, Malia’s short film, The Heart, won the very first Young Spirit Award at the ceremony.

Malia’s rare interview spread like wildfire on the internet, sparking various reactions. Fans largely had great things to say about seeing the former first daughter in a different light. “Oh. She IS the moment. If she ever decided to model, she would DEVOUR, but I know she is minding her business fr,” one fan gushed. Another user wrote, “She has a beautiful speaking voice! I love her accent!!” A third comment read:

“She has grown into such a beautiful young woman. Kudos to her parents for raising 2 great kids.”
